Newman, Running??
So, after some conversation, thinking, and consultation with Bama, I will be starting something of a running program. I don't have any particular goals but will have some when July rolls around for the next monthly running program. Since I am doing this primarily for fun, I'll post my effort here if that is ok with you guys for the time being.

Great another person that is going to be faster than me. As always just joking, glad you decided to give running a try hopefully you will enjoy your efforts. One thing that helps to keep me going is settting up 5K's to gear up for.

I'll second Gregg's suggestion of training for a 5k. They are easy to find, cheap to enter (and the money usually goes to a good cause) and a lot of fun. You find a wide range of people competing from sub-5 minute milers to walkers and from the elderly to kids. Training with a purpose always adds that bit of incentive.
Oh and of course its OK to post your progress here! What kind of a question is that. This is JP Fitness and we're runners -- we're the nicest of the nice

Oh, I will definitely be doing some 5k's, I just haven't gotten that far yet. I was planning on walking one for the Challenge but have since decided I want to run it. I agree with these things, that is why I made such events a requirement for the 61 Day Challenge.
Well, I didn't know if this or my personal log would be most appropriate until the next month thing starts. I just wanted to be sure I got some feedback on my running effort. lol.
I have been reading through some of the old posts in here. Posts I never looked at before. Quite interesting and quite informative. There is a veritable gold mine in here...

Awesome Newman - welcome to the 'Light' side!
Go with whatever works in terms of where you want to get feedback (log or here). The regular runners often check on each other's logs, but keep in touch here as well.
We seem to be getting a few new people lately - for the old-timers, is this a seasonal thing?

I honestly don't know if it is a seasonal thing or not. LOL. I have been on the forums since they began and have never really ventured to the running forum. Shame too.
Thanks for the warm welcome. I am going to go for my first run tonight, I'll post the resutls....

No, it's not seasonal. We've never had this many runners posting on the forums. For awhile it seems like it was just kmwest, twins, and me who confessed to long distance running here at JPF!

Tonight I did my first session of 8 weeks of sessions in preparation for a 5k. I will likely participate in a couple, but the training program last 8 weeks in the beginning. I am doing the Cool Running Couch to 5k program.
Tonights training session was 5 rounds 60s jog / 90s walk [recovery]
Total time including warmup and cool down 30 minutes.
Thoughts: Wow. There is still something to be said about adrenaline but the slow down afterward is even more interesting. I will most likely be sore tomorrow. I did experience some soleus discomfort and IT band was a bit more tight than I would have liked. Additional warmup and mobility drills planned. I will run again Tues.

that's great Newman - I'm on a six week program (but I'm behind as I missed two days) - today I'm starting (3min/3min) * 4 -- heading out in about 10 mins to run in the cooler evening.

Draw your own conclusions. I admit nothing! Oh, wait. It's in my sig! LOL
Good going, Newman. I hope you get the same enjoyment out of running that we do. Be prepared for it to get easier and addicting.

Newman, there are a couple of threads in this forum about biomechanics - one is from UpNorth (Adventures in Barefoot Running) and another is about ChiRunning. It's probably never too early to think about running form, especially since you mentioned tight ITB's and calves. If nothing else, I think trying to reduce stride length and minimizing "bounce" while running can help reduce the impact of running to your body. Not that I'm some kind of expert - I've only recently started working on this myself - but UpNorth and Kevin Littler have both done a lot of work toward improving their biomechanics and reducing injuries and aches and pains.

NICE GOING! I hate every step of a run, but damn I feel so good and proud when I'm done. And I find I miss it since I've been down the past 2 weeks! Never thought that would happen.
Just my .02, I found I had better training results by running a time, vs distance, and steady vs intervals. Just what I had luck with. One of my nephew's is a phys Ed teacher, and he gave teh time vs distance tip.
Good luck with it!
