Jack's First Race
I thought I'd post this over here as well as in my log. This past Sunday was my 9 year-old son's first 5k race. Here's his report.
Redhook Brewery 5k
Watch time: 29:12
Chip time: 29:29
Pace: 9:24
Spilts:
Mile 1: 9:50
Mile 2: 9:10
Mile 3: 9:14
Final: :56
... And the race report in Jack's own words.
We had to change our race numbers from 1008 to 1108. It was very crowded at the beginning of the race and it was very hot. The first hill was very steep but it didn't feel like anything. The first mile was fairly easy but as I went on it got harder. The second mile I picked up the pace and started reeling people in but I got more tired. At the third mile I almost died. A twelve year-old at the very end, who was very short, passed me and I couldn't catch him.
... I don't want to spoil his report with my rambling but I need to add a couple of additions. I'm so proud of him! He really gave it his all today on a hot and crowded course (it was in the 80's with almost 2000 runners). He was hoping to get under 32 minutes and I helped him set the pace to do that but he wanted to pick up the pace after the first mile and obviously crushed his goal and finished strong.
Just to clarify a couple of things he wrote. We were originally give the wrong numbers (we were registered as 1108 and 1109 and they gave us 1008 and 1009) which is why we had to "change our numbers." Also the 12 year old who passed us was a target we gained on through mile 2 and finally passed in mile 3, then with about 400m left to go he past us again, but Jack didn't have the energy to catch him.

Awesome work Jack, breaking 30 minutes your first race is great, and at 9 years old; wow, good job. Won't be too long before you are leaving your dad in your dust.

UN, just remember your quote that I immortalized in my signature. I guess that applies to 4th-graders, too

Yeah, no kidding. The winner in the 12 and under division came in just over 21 minutes! And Buk has succinctly stated my worst fear.

Wow, I can't believe I haven't offered my congratulations yet! Way to go Jack! That is so cool. My daughter like to run but is a little nervous to run a race with me. Any advice to her on trying her first one?

Advice for Asia from Jack...
You shouldn't be nervous, but you should start slow and build up as you go and when you know your ready for the race start thinking about it. Have fun and be determined to finish.

I talked with Asia last night and she said when she comes out to see me next month she'd do a race with me. That's good advice Jack. She's a little speedster so I'll have to tell her to pace herself.
