When do I buy new shoes?
I've been wearing my current shoes since last October. I've probably put 300 miles on them (geez, adds up!) I guess I'm due for a new pair. But I have a ten mile race next weekend, and my 25K next month. How do I work in a new pair? Should I wait until after both races?
These still feel fine. The look OK to me. What signs of wear should I be looking for?

I've always heard that 400-500 miles is the magic number, but I was thinking the same question the other day. 500 seems like a lot, but if they still feel okay and work okay, I wouldn't stress I suppose.

By your shoes feeling okay, I assume you mean that you don't have any new/different/unusual pain or discomfort crop up over a couple weeks or months. If something does, obviously you might need to start looking. Other than that, if you still have tread remaining over the entire sole, there's probably no need to sweat it. Personally, I only recently bought a new pair after two years of on-and-off running, and while they still felt okay, the tread was heavily worn (I'm a heavy runner), and a new pair felt great (I just need to get a lighter pair next time).

I buy 'em when I get that certain urge. I'm rotating 3 pairs right now.
(BTW, I posted in your log about the shoe thing.)

I'd use your current ones for the 10-miler, but new ones for the 25K wouldn't be a bad idea. If you don't change styles, it shouldn't take too long to break them in. Total mileage depends on a lot of things -- sturdiness of the shoe, amount of cushioning, weight of the runner, etc. I usually go too long with a pair and start having aches and pains.

Thanks guys. I think I'll go shopping. I hope I can get the same model. These have been good to me.

i used to buy a new pair every track season ie: Summer track, new shoes, fall/indoor track, new shoes, school/spring track new shoes. this may have been unneccesary but I got shin splints my freshmen year and i noticed that if i didnt get a new pair, my shins would start to hurt again.

I got my new shoes today. I took my old ones in, and she showed me the now obvious wear patterns. I was way overdue. She said that if that had only been 300 miles, she'd be surprised.
