Half Marathon Training
I would like to train for a Half Marathon held next May. I have been using a training progarm from Nike Running to speed up my 5K times and that ends at Thanksgiving with my Turkey Trot 5K. I thought that I would just step into Nike's 10K training and then the Half Marathon training which are both 12 weeks. The timing works out perfect but the problem is that they have a huge cut back on mileage to start each training program. Do any of you have a source for a more gradual training program that I could start using this year and work up until the half next May. Or do you think that it would be more advisable for me to use the Nike programs and just look to the cut backs as additional recovery time?

Have you looked at http://www.halhigdon.com/ ?
He has lots of different programs to check out. What kind of mileage are you at right now?

My last 4 week totals are 13, 14, 15 ending with last week of 12 miles This week I am scheduled to run 17 with the closing weeks being 18, 19, 19, 13 and finishing out with the race week at 9.
I will check out Higdons web site again I think I checked it out in the start looking for a 5k program but I never went back there. Everything else that I have been looking at is pretty much variations on a 12 week program.

You can find some good programs on CoolRunning.com. Powerrunning.com has some really interesting stuff on training methodology, although I don't think they have any designed programs, but it might be worth looking into.
Whatever you chose make sure to plan some time to keep lifting.

the big two that jump out is that you have time to take your time, and you're not putting up big miliage right now so taking your time is a great option.
what kind of drop off in miliage are you looking at? you're probibly going to make it back up within a month anyway won't you?
Best case scenerio, you'll get some needed rest after 12 weeks of hard training, while still moving towards your next goal. Worst case, you don't need the rest...so you run a little harder over the shorter distances.

Gobbla like you suggested the mileage will jump back up in a month and during the winter I could use that break. Looking at all the other programs they generally are set up for runners only and I like to alternate between running and lifting days. The nice thing about the Nike programs is that they use a 4 day routine as opposed to the others which seem to all use a 5 day rotation. I will jump to the 10K program after Thanksgiving and see how that mileage goes. If I am not seeing results I can always switch to one of the other programs with plenty of time to gear up for May. Thanks for the input everyone.

G, here's a 4-day program that's posted on the website for the Half Marathon I'm running in November. I'm not sure how different it is from other 4-day programs you may find:

It is a little less agressive at the start and puts more focus on the long runs of the week. Maybe I will do that over the cold part of the winter so I only need to find one decent day a week to be out there for an extended period. When it starts to warm up a little in February I could go into the Nike program for the last 12 weeks up to the race.
Thanks Dave
