Measuring Distances
I see in many of the training logs that a lot of the runners have very specific distances that you are running and they aren't on tracks. Are you using some type of pedometer to measure your distances and if so is there one style that would be prefered over another?

I know some runners use the GPS Watches. I like to plan several different runs using google maps tools: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ Of course you can always use a bike or car to pre-set a course.

Unfortunately, some of us are overly anal!
I use a GPS watch on my runs, but most of my routes have also been measured by car and/or the Google Maps Pedometer -- which allows me to adjust distances when the GPS watch is smokin' crack (which unfortunately happens more than I would like).

I have a specific route I use and I know where the miles are along the way. I live in an area that has like NO WHERE to run. sux. I have to park on the side of a 4 lane highway and run on the shoulder.

gmaps is ok, though I've started using mapmyrun.com. For some reason I like it better.

I just jump on my bike after the run and ride the distance, see how it was. It's a good recovery, and just another excuse for me to ride
I'm going to get a good running watch one of these days. Or the Nike iPod thing is probably a pretty reasonable way to do it too now...

Oh, are you anal?
Should you really be in here posting at this time of the AM? You might stay too long and slip off your marathon training plan schedule!

Thanks for the advice everybody. I tried the google maps and I will compare that to the mapmyrun site. The bike idea is great now I just need to by one. Purchased two kayaks this year and never got around to that whole bike issue.

BURN!
I use:
1) my car (I have measured routes through my area, and can add up the distance pretty easily)
2) the usatf side UpNorth gave
3) mapquest - I run to a specific address and find the distance via mapquest

For years I used the Nike Tailwind, a small shoe-mounted device that measures distance and time and computes pace. Not a pedometer, it gets its distance information by virtue of velocity, although I don't know more than that about it. It was incredibly accurate and certainly easy to use.
Last year I picked up a Garmin Forerunner 305. This thing is really impressive, easy to use, accurate, and finally giving me a good way to run accurate intervals away from the treadmill.

It can do so much.

I use the Timex GPS Speed & Distance system, with the data recorder. This gives me more info that most people need, but the key info I need: I train differently in the fact that I don't run in miles, I train in meters for 5K preparations. Got sick of doing all the chart look-ups on paces and conversions. I just simply set the watch for metric readouts and I'm set.
