Default New Runner

I just finished my first run of any type Sunday. A friend and I participated in a 1.8 mile Beer Run just for the fun of it. We finished with a very modest 20:59 (also slowed down by stopping and having a beer at the 4 mandatory beer stations) but we both had a blast. We have already signed up for another race a month from now which is a 5K. I typically do HIIT 3 or 4 times a week consisting of 8 sets of 1 minute runs 7.5 mph followed by 1 minute jogs at 5 mph at a 1 degree incline. I was hopping I could get some suggestions from some of you on what I could do to ramp up to the 5K on July 13. If I can't run the whole thing the first couple of times I am ok with doing some walking but I would like to be able to run a full race by early October "hopefully". Any suggestions would be helpful.

First of all, what's a beer run? And how do I get to participate in such athletic pursuits?!?!

Secondly, since you only have four weeks until the 5k, I'd use this plan and jump right into week 4 or 5. You can easily ramp up from 1.8 miles to 3.1 miles (a 5k) in a month.

Will there be beer on the 5K?

The beer run that I spoke of is a annual event held in Milwaukee to kick off Locust Street festival. It is a 1.8 mile fun run with 4 beer stops instead of water stops. They take the first 600 entrants and it weaves through the local residential area. As I said it was my first run so I got quite the kick out of people cheering us on throughout the course. Yes ODB there is beer on the 5K but it is not part of the race. That run weaves throught the Bastille Days street festival in downtown Milwaukee. I am hoping to have friends positioned along the course to hand my running partner and I a few cold ones.
Lastly thanks for the advice I will check out those links and give them a try. As an update I did a walking/running 5K on the treadmill in 36:45 this morning. I know it's not very quick but for 46 year old non runner it's a start. Thanks again for your suggestions

A few Pictures from The 2007 Riverwest Beer Run. It was also my 1 year anniversary of running, if you can really call what I do running.

Pre Race Hydration

The Start

Close to the Finish

Post Race Hydration

A few of the costumed runners

I'll post the report in my log Tuesday as I am going golfing now.

In my Brief conversation I found out the blonde was a grad student at Marquette named Jenn and the other young lady was from UWM but her name escapes me. Both we very accommodating and cute.

There was a guy wearing a Joe Dirt wig so that might work for you. At least at this race.

That never happens to me either. Every time I try to chat up a girl half my age, her parents get really pissed for some reason.

I usually don't go for blondes, but for the grad student her I might make an exception...what was she studying?

Thanks for the idea! I'll use that when I start teaching an undergrad Biology class in a few weeks.
