I did a search on this topic..but couldn't find anything. Which was surprising.
Anyway, I have my first half marathon next Sunday. I bought new shoes about a week and a half ago. I have run in them only twice since the purchase and have had some pretty bad knee pain. Strange thing is...I've never experienced knee pain before. Can a pair of shoes create that much difference??! I made 10 miles before having to get my wiffe to pick my butt up last Sunday. Now...I'm really worried about the race.
I'll be using my old shoes for sure. But I'm skeptical that the problem is totally caused by a different shoe. I mean...I've never had ANY knee issues whatsoever. Any thoughts out there to help me avoid knee pain on Sunday?
I've had new shoes cause knee and shin pain before. How many miles do you have in the old ones? (Sounds like too many.) At 190lbs, 250 to 300 miles tops for me.

Probably the shoes unless you did something to your knee around the same time as getting the new shoes. What kind are they and where did you get them?

Another rooky mistake I'm afraid. I went to payless...but they are New Balance 1023 shoes. Not exactly low end....but not as good as the ones I've been in...New Balance 1049's.

Also, the first thing I do is trash the standard insoles, and buy quality ones. For my old knees, it makes a huge difference.

That's an interesting idea! So...you purchase insoles? I'm assuming you have to go to a running store for that. I'm gonna use my old shoes this Sunday...but I'll be looking into some better insoles for the new pair. Great idea.
You may want to ask on the Injuries forum here or at Runner's World. The one at Runner's World has a lot of activity. Unfortunately, knee pain can be really hard to figure out - but definitely sounds like the shoes are a major suspect.

new shoes can make a huge difference good or bad.
what kind of pain is it? does it hurt when you put pressure on it, all the time, does your knee pop or lock up when you try to straiten it?
[/ QUOTE ]
No pops or lockups (thank goodness) just pain in down in the joint area making it hard to run/walk once I get to that point.
Like I say..I'll be using my old pair. But I've been in them for like 2 years+. I have weighed between 195 and now down to 168. So weight has varied over the years.
I'm gonna tough out the 1/2 Marathon this Sunday. I've put in WAY too many miles of training to back out now.
Hopefully, my old shoes will serve me as well as they were when I pulled them off.

I guess I'm just amazed that shoes make this much difference. As you know, I'm a newby to running and I've always heard shoes make the difference. But until I experienced this...I didn't really believe it was that big a deal. (I used to run in a pair of old converse hightops)

Any place that sells running shoes such as Academy Sports or up, usually offer insoles. It took me some time with experimentation to find the combination I like, which is the Sof Sole sport inserts with a ball of the foot cushion glued on the bottom of that. I’m a heavy pounder with normal arch and step, and I guarantee you your two year old shoes may appear fine, but the cushioning has had the shit beat out of them.

I have no doubt you are right about my old shoes.
And..just for the record. I wen tout this morning for a little stretch run (a very short 1.5 miler) and MY KNEES HURT. Used my old shoes...didn't matter. I'm thinking...I have a problem now. 1/2 marathon this Sunday and I couldn't do 1.5 miles without pain. Afraid I may have some swelling in there somewhere. I'll be eating some anti inflamatories for the road. I REALLY REALLY want to finish this thing. I've been training for months!!
