Default Blisters

Not exactly a running question but I am sure most of you have delt with this. I have a terrible blood blister on my right big toe from playing basketball with not the greatest shoes on and thin socks. I have a Dr. Scholls (sp) blister pad on my toe. Is there anything else I can do to make it go away? Ice, soak it in water, etc..

the only thing that helps me is to drain'em asap, keep barefoot as much as possible to keep it dry.

Even if it is filled with blood? It is a dark bluish color (blood I assume)

for me blood blisters are especially the ones to drain. but keep in mind too that my feet REALLY blister, I've lost the bigger portion of my heal (think entire heal and about midway to ankle) and had several toes blister over...so my paraniod habits and remedy's might be a little more extreme than most people would need. never have had any problems with infections myself...keep any opening clean and use alcohol on the needle\area if you do decide to drain.

keeping the area as dry as possible is the biggest thing though.

I get alot of huge blisters as well.. I not only drain them but cut away the extra skin.. to dry them the fastest possible. Many people say it is better to leave the skin on. but for me, cutting it off works better.

The cutting of for me depends on how deep it is. If it's fairly shallow then cut'ter down. It hurts far less than if it would tear and pull a hunk of non blister off. If it'd deep then mabey, mabey not. I'm pretty much a wussy, and don't dig on the raw friction.

Have you ever had problems with infections? That's been the big scare with most people "don't do that or it'll get infected!"

No infections here. I am going to check it out when I get home. I don't think the people at work would appreciate me draining my blister at the office. If I need to drain it then I will.

While on the subject of blisters, are there any shoes out there that aren't insanely expensive, but still take care of your feet?

What are you wearing now? I find the biggest difference in blisters is your socks. It's all about moisture control. In adventure racing we often use something as simple as duct tape on areas prone to blisters before they happen. Check out this book for other ideas.

so put the duct tape on your skin where blisters often form? Also, do you know if that book would be available anywhere? like chapters?

ODB Duct tape! I'll try that.. I find Moleskin is rather expensive although it really works well.

If you don't want to buy the book you can sign up for his e-newsletter on line. It gives you a lot of good info. It really is the best book I've found on the subject.

that's deffinately a book on the list. since I broke down and got better socks the worst of the problems were over but that's probibly the next buy for me!

I've used duct tape successfully, the only problem was after the sweat makes it loose its grip and it wads up in your shoe. Occasional drying\re-aplication might help with that though.
