I was just thinking of that this morning! Sometime we should find a Half-Marathon or a race with Half and Full Marathon options that would be reasonably convenient for a lot of JPF runners. Someplace within driving distance for a lot of people. Offhand, maybe something in Tennessee, Kentucky?? Cincinnati?? Might be something to plan....
"That sonds good idea Dave." I fixed this twice before my final submit, reading it later it is still not english.
That sounds like a good idea Dave. Off topic here in the running forum, but I am also avaliable for a tri, strongman comp, powerlifting meet, and olympic weightlifting competition.
I'm hoping to put together a trail run or something at the fitness summit if I can get JP to call me!!!
A tri sounds like fun, too. I have been thinking about training for one of those, but I haven't wrapped my mind around the training logistics yet. Little minor things like not having a bike are a problem, although I'm currently lobbying the family for all of us to get bikes so we can do some family active stuff together on the weekends. Swimming is an issue, too!
An Adventure Race would be very fun as well...
A trail run at the JPF Summit sounds really fun. I still need to get over to one of those, although I can't do it this year!
I was looking at a map this AM, and I think Louisville could be a good location, depending on who would want to come. It's a reasonable drive for the runners in IN and MI, also reasonable for me and Buk in Virginia. The Arkansas runners would also be about 500 miles away if they wanted to drive. Plus Southwest Airlines flies there -- good for cheap airfare.
I just thought I'd post this question for fun. Sure, anyone who runs is a runner, and one could talk about it being in your heart, or how you feel when you run, etc, all being part of making one a runner.
All that aside, I thought some of us might consider what amount, frequency, time, and/or distance we think makes one a runner.
I, for instance, am not a runner. I had done some on and off running over the years, but it was more like two miles a couple of days a week for a month, and then fade out. I only put in some serious mileage (for me)getting ready for an overseas training trip three years ago because morning runs would be part of that. Since then, I have had some regular dry spells of no running, but I am back on the wagon now, which for me means 3 days of about 20-25 minutes of interval or hill work. I consider that fitness work, but not running, nor being a runner.
in high school i ran 1 mile races. i never ran long distances. the longest i ever went was 10 miles,(and i swore to never do it again!), but on average i would run 4 miles every other day.

Trying to get this back on topic here is a few of the "East Half" JPFitness members. I know there are a lot missing, but I gotta get back to work, no disrespect is intended. Some may be off a bit, but I think most are close.
Let's see. I ran 12 miles Sunday..but I still don't consider myself a runner. My goal is to finish a 5k in 24 minutes or less. According to my personal goals...I will be a novice runner at that point.
So...in MHO you are a runner when you feel that you have become one. Everyones definition will be different for themselves.
On the other hand...everyone I know thinks I am a runner.
There's a half-marathon about two miles from my apartment on April 9... sounds pretty convenient for me and TAVF .
Louisville sounds pretty good. They have a half-mary on April 29 but I'm doing the Indy race a week after that, so I wouldn't be in for that. The Country Music Marathon and Half-marathon is also on 4/29 in Nashville.
Check out marathonguide.com for a list of all the races. St. Jude's Marathon and Half Marathon looks promising, on 12/2/06. The Indianapolis Half-Marathon in October is fun, but the full marathon sucks.
One more thing - starting in either in early September or late November, I'll be stationed in Quantico, VA (between Richmond and DC) so consider that when looking at race locations.

Dang, I have you both in there, but when you zoom out, it just seems to drop close names at random. Would be nice to have a <font color="red">"More"</font> show up maybe with a number representing how many names were left off. I'm working on it.

Chris, I haven't ever thought about this before, but if someone tells me they are a "runner," I would assume that they run fairly frequently (at least a few times a week), and they are primarily doing distance running... several miles at a time or working to build up to that level. HIIT seems like a different type of workout to me, although it is definitely running!

Cool map!
If we can get an idea of who would be interested in something like this, that would help pinpoint a good central location.

Jimbo, if you can complete a 12-mile run, then you have definitely met the definition of a "runner." A 24-minute 5K is too high of a benchmark... That would exclude a huge proportion of the "runners" in a typical 5K around here!

Yeah, I'm not up for a 4/29 race this year, either, since Boston is on 4/17. But Louisville would be a really good, central spot! 4/29 in Nashville would be okay for a half, but I'm not so sure about a full in late April in Nashville. A lot of potential for hot, humid weather.
Indy in October sounds pretty good to me, offhand. That's kind of far for the Arkansas people, though... Dayton in Sept. is also a possibility, although that's another place that's out of driving range for some... St. Jude (Memphis) in Dec. would be good for me - I would just run the full at that one as a sub for Rocket City in Huntsville. However, Memphis may be out of reach for a number of people....
