Default Too much running?

I need to get used to running again and eventually want to get my 2 mile run time down to 12 minutes or less. For now I'd like to work on just upping my distance. I'm curious how much running is too much in a week? I've been tryign to work myself into the habit of running again, but running on an indoor track when the weather is lame makes my knees hurt after awhile. Right now I just try to run mon-fri, aiming to do about 2 or 3 miles a day. I'd like to up my weekly mileage every week by a couple miles.

Is 5 days of running and resting on the weekend going to be bad for the ol' legs and joints and all that? I'm debating running less days per week, and subbing in a spinning type class on 1 or 2 days instead to work on cardio.

Default Re: Too much running?

Well, everyone is different, but if you build your running up gradually, wear appropriate shoes, and don't feel like you are injuring yourself, then that amount of running (or more) is fine. Since your knees are hurting, you may want to consider getting fitted for running shoes at a good local store where they can analyze your gait and make recommendations - just to make sure you don't need to make a change.
