What my wife said to me
What my wife said to me:
"Are you still going to do that run in February, don't people usually train for something like that?"
I said that yes, people usually do train for a half marathon; but it has been cold and rainy a lot, and I have been a big lazy wuss afraid to get cold and wet. I think it helped motivate me for a 9 miler today. No speed records or anything, but it was an awesome day and I had to get out there. I thought about going for a trail run, but thought that pounding the pavement would be a better idea if I am going to indeed run the Mercades half on Feruary 12. If you have looked in my log lately, you will see that the running has been very sparse, but I know i can finish a half. I walked about 20% of todays run finishing 9 miles at a 9:27 pace. I would be happier if I could run the whole thing, but I will be a good opportunity to get down to Bama and cheer on a friend. I will look into registration and probably make the final decision tonight. I need a 2 week training plan for a half marathon for a non-runner?

Re: What my wife said to me
have a look on runners world they have some great free downloadale routines that really work and get ya doing awesome times.
I found the following worked big time:
Monday HIIT
Thursday: lond slow steady run
Saturday HIIT
still squeezed my weights in between did suffer a bit of lost muscle tho :-( The HIIT improves your stamina and cv ability so that you get far better times/distance on the long slow steady runs

Re: What my wife said to me
Buk when I did a 1/2 marathon I was up to 6miles...and on a treadmill only. I think 2 or three weekends before the race I did a test run for 1hour one way and then had to either run or walk back. Once you get in a groove, you'll be able to keep going. So in a nutshell, I didn't really train for it either...at least the distance part, but I was running cause that was the only thing I did at the time.

Serendipity. I just sent you an article from yesterday's WSJ on the short way to train for a marathon. Perhaps it has some useful tips for you. Good luck.

Re: What my wife said to me
I wanted to save this page, but not in my bookmarks. Kaiser's article kinda put me here talking about FIRST's 3 day a week training. There are 2 programs outlined here, one for finishing and the other for finishing faster. When I have some time I am going to look at it and a few other leads from Kaiser's article. If I get anything good from it I will make a new topic.
Back on the original subject, I finished my half in 2:06:14, a 9:38 pace. My pace for the last 6.9 miles was 9:30, pace for the first 6.2 was 9:47(but that is gun time including getting to the start which could have been about 2 minutes, subtracting that gives me a first half pace of 9:28, and a total and consistent pace of 9:29)
So a half can be done on very little training, my log contains all the running I have done. But I think a little more running would have gotten me in quite a bit faster. Maybe next time, but next time will likely be a tri, for which I will have to learn to swim.

Re: What my wife said to me
If you want to start a war on the Runner's World forums, post a thread on the FIRST 3-day per week marathon training program. The 80-100 mile per weekers will flip out.
A runner I really respect on the forums, and who has racked up several sub-3 hour marathons with a PR of 2:52 at Boston, frequently mentions his three day per week training schedule. He does track repeats (usually 800 meters) one day, a 6-7 mile tempo run, and a long run. He's also lifts weights. And he's also in his late 40's.
I am really tempted to start a thread on Runner's World about a friend of mine from Virginia who ran a half marathon on Sunday with little specific training and then did 225 pound front squats on Monday. Should I be concerned, etc.?? That would get some great responses!

Re: What my wife said to me
Funny, I keep thinking about starting a similar thread at RW about my experiences. I was afraid if I said anything on the "Mercedes Marathon" thread that I would end up destroying it. Even thought about asking for a 2 week training plan for a half marathon for a non-runner at RW when I created this thread, but I think that is what they call Trolling. If I do actually start running more, it is highly unlikely that I will ever go over 3 times a week. I need to go back and count my training mileage for the previous weeks and months so I have the exact numbers. I think that 3 days a week versus what time I actually spent could bring my half time of 2:06 down quite a bit.

He sounds like one of those lazy, unfit masses that that one article you linked to bitched about. How dare he not tear up his ITB with massive mileage? Clearly he's undedicated to the sport.

Re: What my wife said to me
Thanks for the birthday wishes!
Just going over my half marathon training non-plan. For the previous 15 weeks before the race, I ran a total of 52 miles(3.47 miles per week average), ran more than one mile non stop only 6 times(3.11, 9, 2, 6.25, 3.42, 4.5), there were 4 other days where I ran more than a mile on that day, just not without taking a significant break after each mile. This includes all running, even 350 meter sprints within "Crossfit" workouts. Total mileage in 4 week blocks working backwards before the race was: 14.8, 17.2, 18.0, 2.0.
I think the people at Crossfit would see this as a positive for their metholodogies, I wonder what the people at runners world would think? 2:06:14 gun time at the Mercedes half, on 52 training miles the previous 3 months, only running more than a mile 6 times.
I may put a little more thought into making something valuable out of this line of thinking, then start a new thread, but any comments at this point are welcome!

Re: What my wife said to me
I would venture to guess that it has something to do with your all around athleticism and mental toughness.

Re: What my wife said to me
Buk, you should publish your training non-plan! Run a half-marathon on less than 4 miles per week training.
I'm sure CrossFit contributed to your successful completion. Both from a physical and mental standpoint. CF certainly trains perseverance.
What about your volleyball?? That must help with your endurance as well and falls under what twins said about your overall athleticism.
