I finally got around to scanning my Rocket City Marathon finish line photo. This is not as funny as my Mercedes Marathon finish photos from last February, where I looked like I was desperately seeking water in the desert or something!
That is an awesome time above your head! I guess they didn't get any pictures where you dropped and did some push-ups or overhead squatted the barricades? It is a good picture, but the camera man i on the wrong side, you are mostly in your own shadow. I don't see a lot of people around, when I ran Memphis there were people along the course the whole way, the whole time; espically a lot at the end. Be proud of yourself Dave, you have accomplished great things.
Their sign looks like they slapped an "S" on there to make 2005, it really kinda jumped out at me; wrong font, not bold, an "S" rather than a "5"
I was stationed down there at Redstone in the mid 90's. I may be fooling myself, but I can almost picture where those buildings are in the background. But who knows. I'm sure the town has changed alot in 10 yers.
Awesome job Dave. I'll save my gushing over your abilities for your log!
Yeah, it's not the best quality photo -- but this race seems to be kind of an "old school" marathon that still does some things the old-fashioned way. For instance, they mailed us a print of this photo - there were no digital photos from the course. And I have absolutely no complaints. I paid $40 for this marathon and got a $30 Nike Technical Shirt out of it plus a finishers' cap, post-race food, etc. A very good deal!
One of the marathon websites also just named Rocket City one of the fastest marathons in the country for 2005. This was based on percentage of entrants who finished with a sub-3. I believe over 4% finished with sub-3's... that's far different from my next one, Mercedes in Birmingham, in which only 1.6% finished with sub-3's last year!!
It does seem weird that there aren't more people at the finish line. I honestly don't remember. There was more crowd support along the route. It was also VERY cold - race start near 20 degrees, which is downright obnoxious for North Alabama in early December. They did have escorts for us as we crossed the finish line. They grabbed us and oriented us toward the post-race activities.
Yeah, I did notice the weird "5" on the 2005!! LOL!
Dang Bama. It started in the 20's and you are in shorts? Do you always run in shorts? I don't mind getting warm...but getting really cold bothers me. Interesting.
I was pretty cold throughout that race, although my legs were okay. I tend to get cold on top. I wore Under Armour leg tights in the Mercedes Marathon, though, and did stay generally warmer - but I also had a couple of layers on top - so that certainly helped as well. I always wear shorts unless it's below freezing, and if it's not windy, I'll wear shorts for training runs down into the 20's.
