Hey Guys and Gals- Just wanted to give you a heads up on what happened to me this afternoon while I was riding at Boyle. There's this particular hill that I like to do repeats on that intersects with one of the paved trails. My hydration pack and gloves were at the top of the hill, so, just as I crested the top of the climb, two gentlemen were about ten feet away from me. One of them had his pants down and his back turned urinating; the other one looked at me, and started speaking. He asked what kind of bike I had: I said "specialized." he asked "that's an expensive one, huh?" I answered: "no". He asked: "How old are you little girl?" I answered: "Old enough to know not to talk to strangers" all the while trying to collect my pack, gloves, and get my bike shifted out of climbing gears. As I'm riding, trying to shift up for some speed, one starts jogging and saying "come back little girl. she's our girl tonight. we want that bike. come back little girl. we'll see you in the parking lot. you're gonna be our girl tonight; etc. etc. etc." This is probably an isolated incident, but I just wanted to give a heads up to everyone. Be careful out there. I don't what I would have done if I had lost my baby:

Hey Sarah, I'd report that to someone in case those guys try the same thing with another person. One of my good friends who rides in our group rides says that the reason she never rides alone is that she is scared of stuff like that - one of our other friends was on a bike and the victim of an attempted rape when she was younger and is so scarred from that she never rides outdoors anymore. Hopefully that wasn't the case with the clowns you're talking about, but still....

Hey, how's the rear suspension on the Epic you have? I love my Giant NRS2:

the reviews sound similar for your bike. Mine really does climb like a hardtail...it's not just marketing hype by Giant.

I love my bike. It climbs like a hardtail, jumps like full suspension, and I get very little "pogo" action like a lot of the other bikes I tested out that had full suspension. I can lock out the front shock, making it fully rigid for those paved rides to the trailhead. It's beautiful.

Sarah,
Please be careful over there. I would also recommend that you report the incident to the police. Furthermore, get with me on your training nights... I am about to start my training program for the Raid as well and you can join my team on our regular rides anytime. I like to do the Millinium Trail and some of the side off road trails. I know a bunch of them over there. I am back in town so I will talk to you about it at length at the gym. Would you recognise the guys if you saw them again? If so, I want to ride out there with you and have a little "come ta jay-zus talk with 'em!" You worry me.

Ahh, the Fox Float with the front lockout. Good stuff. The Manitou Skareb on mine is the only thing I don't like about my bike, specifically for the reason you mentioned. There's no lockout, and while there is zero bob from the back, the ride to the trailhead can be a bit bouncy if I decide I want to crank it.

Man, all this talk about mtbing really has me wanting to get out and ride; I've been ignoring my mtb for the last few weeks in deference to my road bike. The differences in riding styles between the two are pronounced, so that when I get on my mtb after being on the road a lot, initially I am all steady upper body, which of course you can't do on a trail and still keep your balance. And on the reverse, I have way too much body motion which is wasted energy on the road when I have been riding the mtb a lot.

Hey JP, how's the new Scalpel with that crazy lefty fork doing? Didn't hear any reviews from you after getting it. Also, do you road ride?

Looove my scalpel. It still needs tweaking though. Haven't got it just right for racing yet. My next race is in October. Plenty of time for training.
