July 8 - 39 miles - figured it would be a good day to tack on the back of the 'A' team since the strongest A's were all away doing a 2-man TT race. I was able to hang on the back of the 7 man group in the wind until we got to the rolling hill section. Then, to modify the old Gary Fisher nugget (Light. Durable. Cheap. Pick two), "Hills, Wind, Speed. Pick 2 (or in my case, sometimes 1)." I'm going to call that the Kaiser-ism. I was shelled off the back. Stayed ahead of the B's until we all met up at the turnaround point and then A's slowed down for the second half of the ride and we all rode together.
The heat and humidity were nasty today.

This is my 'slow' week. It's killing me not to be out. But my legs are feeling more fresh.
July Goal: 450 miles
July m-t-d: 218 miles (48% of month with 35% of month gone by)
PS: Where's the rest of my team?? C'mon guys!

July 12 - 20 pseudo-interval/pseudo race tempo miles leading to my fastest solo average speed this season (it is still pathetic).
July Goal: 450 miles
July m-t-d: 238 miles (53% of total with 39% of month gone by)
Not going to be able to ride again until Sunday, which is a scheduled short mileage team ride. Next week looks tough too - glad I am ahead in mileage now, because I'm gonna probably need it come the end.

You could tell us what this solo average speed is. We'd like to know. I'll speak for the rest of emm.

Sorry man. Kinda like bad talk comparing schlong sizes, it's something I'd rather stay out of, especially considering the host of factors that go into average speed (out here, it's all the stoplights).
Just to not pique your curiousity though, the A part of our team that I was hanging on the back of last week has stretches between 28-32 mph. Needless to say, I stay out of their paceline rotation most of the time, hanging on the back. The B, where I usually ride, has a rolling pace of 22-25 mph - not superfast, but faster than some of the other B's from other clubs. Personally, I start getting gassed if I am pulling above 23-24 mph.
On the relative scale of all cyclists, I'm on the upper end. On the scale of all serious cyclists, I am so far down that I don't even race Cat5. As Fish likes to say DFL>DNF>DNS. So true. The funny thing is, I like the sensation of moving fast under your own pedal power - whenever there is one of those mobile radar stations that police put up to slow cars down, you see me going crazy to try to get the reading as high as I can go (which usually isn't very high - alas, my top speed isn't too high either).

I hear ya. I didn't realize it was such hallowed ground. But I do understand the many factors that can affect avg. speed. So it makes sense that does not help provide much info. I wouldn't be able to take too long a turn at the front while doing 23-24. Flat pulls are one of my weaknesses. I think I need most work on the flats. I sprint OK....so that helps me cover attacks. And I climb OK. But i'm not nieve. I do realize that we don't have any "real" climbs here in the dallas area.
I appreciate your response the Kaizer, because you info does give me some insight. And insight is what I am looking for since I am rather new to this genre of cycling. Remember, i'm a freak at the end of the day (not that you could tell it by my riding logs).

LOL Flee. The problem is, I am riding in the 'burbs, where a traffic light slows you down regularly. I could add 3-4 mph onto that average speed if I went somewhere where I could ride without having to slow down for traffic or stop at intersections. The bad part is, it plays to my strength of bursts and downtime versus a steady sustained fast pace. I'm a good jackrabbit, but a bad distance runner.
Your description of your weakness sounds like mine. No power to pull (or ride) at higher speeds for a long time. I've been doing intervals holding a speed as long as I can this year and it has helped a bit (see ride report below). I have no idea how I'd climb. There are so few extended climbs here - the ones that we have I do OK on - passing a lot of people, but I get my HR up because I know the end isn't too far away.
July 15 - 43+ miles - chomping at the bit to go out because of a slow week and watching the Tour. Ended up with my highest average HR (160) for the year today. Started out with a very small (7 rider) B group, but we caught the 14 person A group about 8 miles into it (stoplights!). I, along with another rider hooked onto the back of the A's, expecting to be spit out. Luckily, it was a good day for me to do it. No wind, beautiful 68 degree temp, and the A's decided to ride it more like a team time trial than an attacking surging ride. This helped me a lot, because I was able to hang on the back as they held 36 mph (36!! in a single line train of only 14 people!) forever and ever on two long sect | |
