Eric! Teammates Coming Through
Hey man, the Ride The Rockies ride is coming up Rabbit Ears and through SS on Sunday evening! Look for my teammates Dan, Harvey, and Bill in their Colavita kits and give 'em a free coffee on me (I'll pay you back!) In this old pic, Harvey is far left standing in back in the white helmet and Dan is in back in the orange and blueish helmet. Bill's not in the pic, but he's kinda tallish and I'm sure you'll have no problem finding him and the other two in the thousands on the Ride! Thanks man!! :p

Will do K. I'll figure something out, maybe get them a room upgrade? Get me their last names in a PM and I'll see if I can upgrade them.

LOL - just kidding man. They are all sleeping in tents along with the 4 other riders joining them (one of whom is Mike Adamle, the sports reporter guy).

The guy third from the right looks vaguely familiar...I think I saw him in Ringling Brothers or something...

No.. seriously. I'm about even with my friend Dan (orange helmet) and the rest in that pic could drop me. Including the gal (well, she is a Cat 3). Oh well, slow and some miles is better than slow and no miles, right?

Well K - didn't see them at the hotel, as you said I wouldn't. The vast majority of riders camped at the high school, which is a few miles from my hotel. However, I did carry about 100 bikes from storage to the lobby. Good fun.

Wow - 100 bikes. Was the hotel totally booked with RTR riders? I want to do the RTR, but there is no way I'm camping and sleeping on the ground after that kind of altitude and mileage (yeah, I know, I'm a wuss, but also a real light sleeper and I can't imagine riding the mountains after a night of poor rest and showering in a mobile van).

We had a bunch of rooms, I think about 95 rooms of RTR'ers. It was pretty cool, they're for the most part pretty nice people. There were some huge assholes. They would come in whining to no end, "I just rode 94 miles, I don't even want to LOOK at my luggage, take it!" and in a mean way.
I'd say "I just did a triathlon and drove for three hours, where would you like your luggage? Pansy."

What a bunch of jags. I bet those are the guys on the $5K bikes that didn't earn the right to ride them by actually riding.
Were you at full occupancy?

Well, we also had the Colorado Cattlemen's Association in the hotel that night, and they were super happy that they had to dodge cyclists coming down the pass. So there were some fireworks, and I sided with the cyclists, obviously.
And there were a lot of tools out there on really expensive bikes. I wanted to show them how to ride. There were these two guys decked out in FULL Disco kits, down to the Disco Treks who were 9+ hours on the 95 mile ride. And 90% of that ride was rolling or downhill. It was sad.

Maybe they are on the Discovery team.
It was funny in the days of Lance seeing guys decked out in full Postal kits. The reason it was funny was that two of the Postal guys at the time lived and rode around here (Kenny Labbe and Robbie Ventura) and they would ride with their team kits (hey, they get loads of stuff for free, you know?) Mostly the guys in the full team kits tended to be overweight and slow though. Still, I wear my team kit, which is similar to the pro team kit sponsored by our natinoal sponsor, Colavita, and I am glad most people here associate the kit with our local club instead of the pro team. Luckily, Colavita is not a high profile pro team.
I remember when I first got my current road ride. One of my friends, Dean, who has the older version of the same bike and puts on 12,000 miles a year told me, "Now you need to earn that bike by putting the miles on it." I have never forgot that. Add to that when I was talking to our LBS owner (and team member) and telling him I was thinking about getting another road ride and making my current one my 'beater' for bad weather, winter, etc. He said that I shouldn't even consider it until I had put well over 10,000 miles on this bike.
