Exclamation Learn from my idiocy!

Recover with proper nutrition!

Last week, I wasn't recovering as quickly as I normally do from my hard rides. Yesterday I couldn't believed how wiped I was from my Sunday team ride. It was hard, but not that hard. I started wondering if I was coming down with something, but no other symptoms. I did a mental check of everything that would affect my recovery:
-sleep. Check. Actually, I had been getting more sleep in the last week than usual, my body's sign of telling me it needed it (but why?)
-diet. Enough carbs for my rides (actually took Accelerade for the longer ones), amino acid supplements. All OK.
-foam roller. religiously.
-caffeine: hell yeah!

Then, this morning it hit me. I ran out of protein powder exactly 10 days ago. I didn't get more. I usually take it in the morning and after a ride, and hadn't been. Which probably explains why my muscles were so tired on the last few rides and why they were unusually tired afterwords.

Going to buy some more today. So make sure if you are going to push your body hard that you are taking in the right nutrition to allow it to heal properly and quickly.

PS: I'll follow up this post in about a week to let you know if adding the protein back in made a difference.

I'm on a very low carb diet, but if I forget to eat 10-20 grams of carbs (Dove Candy) weight lifting results in a number of low sugar symptoms. Food is good.

Surely that's not the only idiocy you've had from which we can learn...

Thanks for sharing K! I always remember PWo shakes when I lift, but my brain does not look a cycling as a workout so I tend to forget those (one of many flaws I'm sure). I will have to make an effort to correct that.

Sadly, so true.
