Default Personal Training without cert or liability

Hello.

Here is my question/scenario. I was approached by a former company CEO who asked if I would personal train him and his wife at their home gym. He has been retired for almost 2 years and now consults/lobby's on the companys behalf. Just to provide some background, I work for a Employee Health Management company as a program manager that provides comprehensive wellness programs and services for this company. So this is how he knows me, not too mention that I put him thru a program a few years back while he was still an employee, but it was at the on-site corporate fitness center that we also manage on top of all the other wellness services. Got That

So technically he is a civilian and he wanted to work with me again but in this capacity. I already talked to my boss and we feel it would not qualify as a conflict of interest since he is no longer a active employee and any services would be performed on my own time ( if I decided to do this ) and would not impact my work or the relationship with my account.

Here is my issue. I am no longer certified nor do I have liability insurance. I do have a degree in Exercise and Sports Science from Penn State and I am very knowledgable about exercise and nutrition prescription. Not too mention I manage the wellness programs for this company and have served as a fitness specialist in my past careers and have trained many folks. So I have good credentials and experience. I did not recert my ACE because I felt I did not get any improved knowledge from what I already knew. I just got it in the first place to have the title as a certified trainer. I always had the knowledge and knew how to use it.

So your thoughts. Would you take his offer and train them. Have them sign a participant consent and liability form and go with it. Or would you be weary due to the liability issues. Thats my main sticking point.

I was thinking of purchasing liability from trainer insurance.com.. $175 premium..thoughts on these on-line ins carriers?

Thanks

I don't see the harm in covering your ass. And how hard is it to get a cert? You could pass a test without even studying from the sounds of it. You probably need the cert to get the insurance, and you NEED the insurance. You never know what could happen. I've been training for 23 years with no incidents, but I still don't want to get caught with my pants down. The way my luck runs I would have a client die on me the day I let my insurance lapse.

I know the guys at trainerinsurance.com and they are a really good group. I highly recommend them.

I just went over there and they offer a $250 policy for non-cert'ed people. I assume you would qualify for that policy with your degree and background.

$175 for certified.

I may go with them myself.

Thanks folks. I think Iam going to sign up for a policy at trainerinsurance.com. I would qualify for the $175 premium. I am just a bit skeptical about the on-line carriers like these..seems way too easy to get a policy without the necessary Q&A one would expect for this type of business. Your thoughts?

I trust JP's opinion on them. If he knows and trusts them, it's good enough for me.

They aren't an "online" insurance company... They are a full-fledged insurance company that did all my business liability and trainer insurance. They just happen to market a lot on the internet. Furthermore, they are a great group of people. I know a few of them personally from the Thomas Plummer events. The owner is a really funny cool guy with the nickname "the singing insurance guy" and he actually comes out and sings some hilarious songs about running a struggling fitness center. He's definitely been in the trenches.
