Default another question : (

With the ACE certification exam, I'm studying hard for it, but I'm having trouble understanding something else.

I've memorized the names of the rotator cuff muscles - suprapinatus, infrapinatus, teres minor, subscapular muscles.

However, there is a question of mine regarding their function. How does the anterior, posterior, and lateral deltoids come into this? The primary role of the rotator cuff is strength and stability of the shoulder, while I'm sure the muscle groups listed has influence on it.

The question "which part of the rotator cuff abducts the shoulder?" Which would refer to a lateral raise type motion, I'm unsure, the lateral deltoid does but I'm not sure how the Latin terms of the rotator cuff would influence that movement.

Thanks for replies.

I believe it is the supraspinatus that also abducts the glenohumeral joint. My Kinesiology text book doesn't mention anything about it's primary actions during the ROM of GH joint abduction. However, base on the manual "Building the Efficient Athlete" by Eric Cressey and Mike Robertson, the primary action of the supraspinatus is during the first 15 degrees of abduction.

They should specify if it's lateral or transverse, but yes the supraspinatus does assist the lateral and ant deltoids in lateral abduction.

Lateral referring to standing?

Transverse referring to laying down?

Shoulder Articulations

More on shoulder movement - it illustrates assessment but you can get a good idea of scapular movement visuals vs. shoulder movement visuals and picture what is being refered to a little better than the exrx I linked before.

Excellent links, Lisa, thanks!

That question is on the ACE practice test and gave me trouble too.

Hey, MVP, see you tomorrow!

Hey, JP,

No, I am pissed off. The "live" test we took takes SIX WEEKS to get results back. It was on the website, but not in any place that humans would read. When it was announced at the exam, there was a huge groan--none of us realized it.

I feel like a fool because if you take the computerized version, you get results right away.

Plus, I did not get the version of the test that others have talked about....it was ALL anatomy extrapolations and touchy-feely stuff. I'm not feeling real friendly toward the ACE people right now.

Anyway, if I didn't pass this time, I'll take it again right away at one of non-19th-century venues.

Right now, I'm just spinning my wheels.....
