Default Starting a Kids Fitness Class

So I brought up the idea of a kids fitness class to the manager of the gym that I work at, and he really liked it. I have started to work on some basic/general ideas for it but would really like appreciate anyone's input. We are targetting children between 6-12 (a big developmental gap, I know).

If anyone has anyone has any experience/suggestions with this let me know.

Thanks.

For what its worth...and I have very limited experience here...children in the lower end of that age range need help mostly with balance, agility and basic motor skills (i.e. simple drills), while the upper end could benefit from basic body weight exercises and strength training, using limited weight.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. I was hoping to build it more around "games" and obstacle courses than actual exercises...

Thanks for the reply!

Bingo. First priority is fun, meaning games. Obstacle courses, relays, red-light-green-light, animal walks, tag using different skills (monkey stance, one-legged, etc). Rock it.

Have you done/considered the IYCA cert? Ben can attest to the relevance and usefulness of the content for what you are proposing.

I agree with Ben - keep it fun, lots of games and you can divide them up according to age group within a class. Alternatively if interest is adequate, you could even run 2 seperate classes.

You can even promote some leadership qualities in some of the more skilled older kids and have them guide and teach some of the younger ones.

Just some thoughts..

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll be working on a class description as well as an overview of the class over the next few days.

coreconcepts: I have been thinking about the IYCA cert and think I'm going to work on getting that. I just have a few other things to handle first.

Thanks again guys.

Just curious, but are you thinking of making the class more fitness oriented or sport preparation? Pros and cons of each?
