Default Exercise Nomenclature

I wrote a blog entry about how some personal trainers name their exercises after a client came to me w/ a mess of a program from another trainer.

I was wondering if anybody else sees this as an issue?

I just started thinking about this again because I always call supine lying triceps extensions French presses and I really don't know if that is correct. Maybe French press is only w/ the EZ curl bar?

I think the best way to name all exercises is the standard way which I try to explain.

Exercise Nomenclature

Interesting Michael...

Of course in the ideal world, everyone would use the same terminology, particularly when it makes sense to be standardized. But then again you would be training in kilos, not pounds.

All kidding aside, in general, this is something that happens in every field when people give/apply a new meaning to a word, or perhaps a different usage and it becomes ambiguous in meaning. This is even more the case with field specific words...

I think that fitness has more "factors" that lead to this kind of thing. In particular, gym lore, and the word of mouth kind of teaching that goes on both from laymen and trainers, the lack of standards in the industry (in organizations/licensing/educat ion/certification), the "sell/marketing" aspect, the "macho" aspect and the ego aspect contribute to new namings. Some seem be quite appropriate and are appealing - to my mind, pistols, Arnold presses, skull crushers... though others like the Waterbury Walk, don't cut it for me- and are unlikely to catch on.

One thing you will find, is that you will not be able to "control" the language, some usages will catch on and like in other areas of language change they will become accepted names or usages.

Cheers

Peter

It will never be standard. There are still people out there who call regular old squats - "deep knee bends".

I agree. The only reason I bring this up is I am moving away and I have all my clients workouts for the trainer taking over.

I was thinking whether the old workouts will be useful to the other trainer or not. With the combination of my sloppy writing and "Grave Diggers," "Gut Busters," and "Shark Monkey Pull-ups" I would just assume throw all the old workouts in the trash.

I have always wanted to make a list of "special" names my clients and myself come up with for various exercises...

for example...the first time I had a particular client do band "swims" (as JC Santana calls 'em)...my client dubbed them the "prison shuffle" b/c of the bending over at the waist action, lol!
same client has also designated plyo pushups performed with hands landing in alternating fashion on med ball at top of movement, then ground at bottom, "el diablo"...
i have some crazy clients!
i like having my own names for exercises that need 'em...both nothing too far-fetched!
i would say leave the old files for the new trainer...if they are fairly savvy, they should "get" most of it...i'm a big believer in files anyway...they are a great resource!

Question

I will name off a few exercises I have heard in the past years that to this day I have ABSOLUTELY no idea what they are.

If anyone can shed some light on them please do.
  • Pterodactyls
  • Japanese Push-ups
  • Biceps Peaks
  • Chest Rippers
All I can think of at this moment

I feel for you, I am currently doing a literature review of some mathsy papers and all the authors use different symobology and assume that the reader understands so they don't include a glossary.
