Default First Client Assessment

Hey guys, I am just trying to get a few ideas on how other CPTs perform their first client assessment. This is pretty much the only part I am worried about when getting my CPT career started. If anyone could give any advice I would be very grateful! Thanks!

Are you familiar with Cook's functional movement screen? If not goto Cook's site and look at videos there.

Otherwise of course sit and listen to the client. Ask about their goals, training history, medical condition, past injuries etc... and get a sense of who they are, personality, and where they want to get.

In addition to what Kuri said, its also a good time to take inital measurements: hight, weight, body fat, circumferance measurements (I use Bicep, Chest, Waist, Hips, Thighs). See what their flexablility is and what limmitiations they have. If you are planning to talk nutrition with them you may want to ask them to start a nutritional journal and bring it with them the next time they come so you can get a snap shot of how they are currently eating.

As far as Gray Cook's FMS, it's a great tool if you are comfortable using it. Definetly practice with it a lot before attempting to use it with clients.

Completely agree with the above comments... find out what they want to accomplish so that you can tailor the assessment appropriately. I would always test for HR/BP, and basic posture. +3 on the Gray Cook movement screen - and I concur with Brian that it takes practice.

As you become more skilled, consider other muscles testing evaluations... a classic but universally applicable book is Kendall's Muscle Testing and Function. I usually pull some ROM tests from it.

A couple of particularly useful muscle tests are; modified Thomas and a Fabers.

My first assessment is a simple observation to their standing & seated postures, and deamenor during rapport.
