I wouldnt say optimal for every client. I think it allows me to focus more on each specific muscle group than a total body workout. This becomes more important as the client progresses, not so important at the beginning when a whole body workout would easily suffice. Also i believe in different training methodologies and im certainly not saying that i dont believe someone can get a great physique working out with a whole body workout or many other types of workouts. Im just saying what has worked best for me and my clients in the past (with exceptions of course). I love hearing other types of training and am still in the process or learning new and different ways to get clients results(we all should be.)

I don't like the muscle splits mainly because too many exercises overlap, and because too many folks are hung up on the "must destroy a muscle before it grows" thinking.

Two-way splits (upper/lower, push/pull) can get the job done just as well, though I'll concede that a well-designed muscle-split-in-name-only can be pretty effective in someone with the foundation for it.

But not many people I see do that. Which is why that kind of training draws flak.
