I came across this while studying for the test as well. Never did give it a try. After looking over its content again I'm a little ashamed of myself for considering it. The first statement under the "Exclusive Test Taking Techniques" says it all for me".

Keys to questions that "give away" wrong (or right) answers- You get credit for some questions without really even knowing anything about them

All I can really offer is what worked for me and that was reading the text. I typically shot for a chapter or so a day. When all was said and done, I probably read the book cover to cover about three times in a three month period. Yeah it wasn't always what I wanted to be doing with my time, but my desire to succeed on the exam far outweighed my occasional restlessness. Nothing bad has ever come from hard work and due diligences. Read the text, learn the material and be confident in what you know. You will be a better professional for it. Good luck with the exam.

Yeah, it seems more like somebody is trying to make some money. I only have the book and am doing just that, reading the book cover to cover, I am covering about 3-4 chapters a week. Did you get the Symposium CD's as well..if so, how helpful were those??

Thanks

It's a LONG read, but Jonathan's CSCS odyssey has some good information. He'd already been training others for awhile and so had some experience, so keep that in mind as/if you read. I'm currently studying for the CSCS myself and am going hard and heavy on just the book. I may order a practice exam when I'm comfortable with my book knowledge (FWIW, the 3rd edition material won't show up on the exam until July 2009).

The material I had in my possession included the Essential of Strength and Conditioning text, the Free Weight and Machine Exercise Technique dvd, and the CSCS practice exam. The text was easily the most useful resource followed by the practice exam followed by the exercise technique dvd. You already know my take on the book so I will just leave it at that.

The practice exam was a nice way of judging your retention level in the various content areas prior the the exam. I believe I took it a week or two prior to the exam itself, and then brushed up on my weak points for the remainder of the time. It's also a good way to prep yourself for the exam format.

I could see the exercise dvd being more useful for an individual with limited hands on experience inside a training facility. By hands on I don't necessarily mean training others. If you have spent any amount of time training yourself and can identify a lunge from squat (maybe an over-exaggeration) a lot of the video may be review. I don't want anyone to think I'm throwing the dvd under the bus by any means. It does offer some pertinent information, but again it all depends on the amount of knowledge you are bringing to the table before hand. The book covers everything you need to know in more detail. However, if you are a visual learner it might be worth taking a look at.

Hope this helped.

3rd edition material = from 3rd edition ("new" book with black and dark blue cover). The possible rub is that there will be new/updated material in the 3rd edition that the 2nd edition will test for differently. Probably six and one half-dozen, though.
