Default American Board of Sport Psychology

I'm a psychology major (beginning my PhD next year) willing to practice as a sport psychologist or at least integrate physical activity in my future practice. As of now though, I would like to get some knowledge in this field and maybe offer consultation services as a sport psychology consultant within the next year.

The American Board of Sport Psychology (ABSP) offers a certification which would let me do this without having a Masters or a PhD yet, while some other organizations need them (such as the Association for Applied Sport Psychology or the Canadian Sport Psychology Association). I will probably have to take that route because there's no sport psychology specialization at my university and I would have to spend 30 000$ for an internship in Western Canada (I'm in the East...).

Did anyone hear about the ABSP certification ?

Here's the content of the certification :
1. History and Overview of Sport Psychology
2. Motor Learning
3. Neuropsychology/physiology and Cognitive Sport Psychology
4. Sport Psychophysiology and Biofeedback
5. Promotion of Wellness through Sport Psychology
6. Assessment in Sport Psychology
7. Interventions in Sport Psychology
8. Research Methods in Sport Psychology
9. Ethics and Critical Thinking in Sport Psychology
10. Sport Psychology and Psychotherapy

I've never heard of this, but it is extremely interesting.

Apparently the certification is 1500$ which isn't so bad. I have concerns regarding the its recognition though but a coach/trainer could benefit from this.

Absolutely! Understanding basic ex phys and biomechanics is just a small part of it. Someone who knows all that stuff but doesn't understand the psychology is not going to be very effective. I'd say that most of what I do is psychological.

I did a basic Sports Psychology Diploma here in the UK, through Premier Training. Maybe not as academic as the above course but still very useful in day to day training.

Found it great a very useful course taht greatly added to my skills as a PT. Just for those who might be interested I have enclosed a list of the modules we covered:-

- History and Intro to SPorts Psychology
- Motivation
- Exercise Adherence
- Goal Setting
- Confidence
- Arousal
- Relaxation
- Imagery
- Self Talk
- Attention
- Motor Learning

I finally chose not to do it since the "owner" of the American Board of Sport Psychology was not objective enough in my opinion. Everything evolves around him, he wrote the articles I'd have to read and he didn't even care to answer my last email which was about this issue actually. It's a nice way to treat someone who was ready to pay 1500$ for a certification...
