i love the stripper-shoulder-shimmy as you set up for the clean -
at least you'll be more than ready for any room noise distraction at your meet !
I know, it's my "relax your shoulders" move. It looks stupid, but otherwise I get all tense. Yeah, isn't like Tiger Woods' dad who used to yell at him and try to break his concentration during putting practice?
I think of the Olympic women's gymnastics. There you are on the balance beam, ready to do some amazing backflipping trick on that little piece of wood --- and next door the floor exercise diva is doing a routine, with loud music and does a trick that gets a roar of applause just before you take off ...
Very mediocre workout today. I just wasn't feeling it. Snatches seemed off and my hands are still suffering. I have rest days planned for tomorrow and Friday so hopefully I'll be back to feeling 100% by Saturday.
Warmup: cat/camel, birddogs, scap pushups, glute bridge, wall slides, hip corrections, leg swings, squat to stand, cradle walks, calf warmup, extra stretching, warmup with the bar.
Snatch 2x2x20kg, 2x2x25kg, 6x1x27.5kg, 3x1x30kg
Snatch Balance w/OHS 3x5x20kg
3pt DB Row 3x5x30#
Rack Pulls 3x8x135#
KB Swings 3x8x40#
Side Planks 3x60 seconds per side
Just watched the videos. Awesome. It's great you're looking at competing. If you don't mind me asking, how old are you? How long have you been working the oly lifts?
I've toyed with the notion of working into training for competition, starting as the really weak, old guy that I am, but there's no qualified local coach here that I've been able to identify. Of course, if there was, then I'd have no excuse.
Oh, and can you post a close up video of the stripper shoulder shimmy? I think if I learned that it's help me relax, too.

It'll be fun to follow your progress. Keep at it!
Hey Chris, thanks for stopping by and checking out my log...shimmy joke and all. You should absolutely learn the O Lifts - they are so much fun! You're a martial artist right which means you probably have good flexibility. If you've got that, you're halfway there. Oh, and I'm 42 ()and have been learning these for almost 7 months. Most of the time I was learning with the help of a great trainer who had not taught the olympic lifts before. I've been training with a "real" coach for a whopping 2 weeks.

Are you sure there's nobody in your area?
It's always dangerous making such jokes with those we don't know well, but sometimes I just can't help myself. Sorry if that was a bit bold.
Another member here -- Hunter -- who actually lives where I do has done some searching. He found someone who he was going to check out further because the guy felt he could be helpful. But, he's a trainer, not an oly coach per se. I could head to the Twin Cities (150 miles) and meet up with a coach every now and then; a coach down there offered to do so. But I travel enough for martial arts; I'm reluctant to travel more. I just figure it could be a fun way to train that would also have good martial arts benefit carry over.
From what I can tell, my combination of flexibility and stability is pretty good. When Bill Hartman ran everyone through an assessment at the summit a couple of years ago, I tied for high score. But, I'm sure some glaring weak link or two in those areas in regards to the oly lifts would come out under a trained eye. But, I've got a good start, aside from being weaker than a girl (maybe literally in your case!) I seriously might just have to work on basic strength more.
What was your base of work before the oly focus? What did the previous person help you work on and identify for attention? And what has your current coach focused on? What have you found most challenging? Your lifts looks pretty darn good. You surely had a good base/head start.
Well, in any case, this isn't about me. I'm just admiring of you. At least I can live vicariously though you. LOL
I know how I feel about my older, women tkd students who start and progress over months and years. I'm very admiring and proud of them. So, I guess that's why I'm excited for you! BTW, my top two color belt lady students are about your age. And I'm even older!
Flexibility and coordination are really important if you want to learn the olympic lifts. You can ALWAYS work on getting stronger right? If you don't have flexibility, it's really difficult. I was a competitive figure skater growing up which gave me a great base of flexibility, coordination and big muscles in my legs that never seemed to go away. I actually lifted less than one year prior to deciding it would be fun to learn to OL.
I've only trained w/this new group of folks and coach twice so they are just doing little tweaks to my technique each week. Things like narrowing my stance, widening grip on the snatch, make sure I'm not looking up, relaxing my arms, not strangling the bar w/my grip (again, relax my upper body), fast feet on the jerk, dropping FAST to make the catch on cleans and snatches, all sorts of fun stuff.
You may really like this stuff coming from a martial arts background. I was initially drawn to it because it combines the fun of lifting heavy stuff with my affinity towards refining technique, attention to detail, competition, etc. At least set up one session with this guy in the Twin Cities. I would think that after ONE session, you will be hooked. Just ask Tina!
Nice videos Jill!! They sure were noisy in the background! I agree with Roland - that guy wasn't working them out hard enough - all that chatter going on!
Realize this is probably a shot in that dark, but did you know an Angie Davidson back in your figure skating days. She use to train out east with some Olympic trainers.

Had a great workout today. This is possibly due to the fact that today was the FIRST nice day of the year. Sunny and 62 degrees. Helloooo spring. Worked out with the other local lifters. Snatches were working well today for me. I did about 15-20 of them today using about 27.5kg (just working on technique). I am getting much better at getting that fast drop and my arms seemed to be much more relaxed today.
Clean and jerks were also pretty good today. Did 15 or so reps working up to 47.5kg. It's so tough to get that quick drop on these, but I think I'm improving. Front squats after that. 5x3x52.5kg. That's all folks
Hey Diane! Thanks for stopping by. I've always been pretty active, I just never lifted except for a small stint in the early 90s using a couple machines at the gym after my step aerobics class . Then I did yoga for about 7 years.
Good workout today. Didn't do any olympic lifts since I was pretty tired from yesterday. I did some shoulder stuff (jerks were hurting a bit yesterday) and did squats and GHRs.
Warmup - cat/camel, birddogs, scap pushups, glute bridge, wall slides, leg swings, hip corrections, cradle walks, squat to stand.
Scap retraction on pulldown machine (not sure what to call these) 3x12x40#
Is, Ys, Ts, Ws, Ls prone on incline bench w/5# DBs - 5 reps each
Front Squats w/narrow stance 2x6x50kg, 1x8x40kg
Front Squats w/wide stance 2x6x50kg, 1x8x40kg
Cyclist Front Squats 2x8x65#, 1x12x45#
GHRs 4x8xBW (haven't done these since November so took it easy)
Just curious, why all of the mobility and prehab type work? Is it just the warmup you decided on, or are there particular issues you're trying to address?
Jill - what are "cyclist" front squats? Here I was thinking Danny's put me through every front squat variation and I don't know this one.
