You do overhead press more than me. Very nice.

Simon knows that's not me in the picture. That's why he said except it will be him. Because my picture isn't of me. He's saying his will be of him. Get it yet, or do I need to get the crayons out?

I don't follow any of the guys from westside or any other club. Why did he leave?

Nothing. I'm moving up.
My goal for the overhead is two plates.

225 strict press will be hard, but if you get it, it will be good. A lot of the guys who can jerk 300+ pounds can't do strict presses w/175.

is that true?

I can't even bench 225 yet.
But I figure if I can OH press 225, I can bench 275 (or more), which is my goal.

I'm going to keep having a bench day and an OH press day. I think this is working pretty well.

If you can OH press 225, you\'d bench closer to 325!

I don't know. My highest bench so far is 205, though I'm probably capable of 215/220 now.
160 overhead press.

That's only 60 pounds difference at most.

I guess I won't really know until I get there. Maybe I'll make a 200 OH my goal , and leave 225 for a longer term goal.

yes, very true. A lot jerk the weight, so they need to have big squats to do it, or at least get good leg drive from their dips.

If you build up your push press, you're going to build up your strict press. I think it's the easiest way, because you're putting higher weights overhead, so when you go to strict press, you're going to be used to the weights you used to be slow on strict pressing.

work on push presses. Not gay push presses, but actually dip, drive as hard and quick as you can to get the weight overhead.

I'm going to be honest with you, I can't do push presses.

I dip down and I can get good leg drive, but I end up throwing my chest into the bar, and it doesn't feel good on my spine.

I kind of whip my chest into the bar, if that makes sense. I don't know how else to explain it, I just know it doesn't feel good.

I'm thinking of trying something out with the bench. I read it in an article on elitefts.com I think last week.

Set up the bar with a lightish weight (I forget the percentage they suggested, but I remember thinking I'd be using something around 135) and when you get to chest level, get someone to push against the bar. So you're pushing against them with full force for a good ten seconds. Then they let go and you pump out as many reps as you can with the weight.

I'm weak off the chest, so I thought this might help with that. The only reason I haven't tried it out yet is because I can't necessarily find someone I trust to spot me, much less fight me with the bench every time I want to do it.

I've heard of this technique before, just never thought much of it.

there's no reason you can overhead press, but not push press. It just doesn't make sense. Your form must be jacked up, so just learn proper form. Dip back, like you're going to squat a few inches, then drive as hard as you can. Try it with warmup weights, until you get it fast.

this sounds like a disaster. I can just see the person holding the bar against your chest while you're trying to press.

True.

Ya you're right, what was I thinking.

Maybe I'll try pushpresses after my strict press stops moving.

I hate push presses. I get about 2 inches of leg drive then have to grind that weight all the way up.

That bench sounds horrible. Set-up some type of progression for your bench and try that. Most raw presses are weak off of their chest, thats the hardest part of the lift.

throw in some incline bb presses, floor press too and youll be benching 2 plates in no time.

well, that's probably because you're not actually using the PUSH in push presses.

Frank, I'm doing incline bb press and flat db press right now, which both should help me off the chest I think.
I'm also doing rack presses at an inch or two off the chest. Basically what I did was, during the warm up sets, I just kept moving the pins down until I found myself thinking "shit, this is the most uncomfortable shit ever, I don't want to press from here". So I'm working at that setting.

I expect to be pressing two plates real soon. Couple weeks, tops.

squat - February 6

squat
295x3,2,2

front squat
205x2x3

RDL
325x4x3

side bends 90x6x2 - I had to use a multi purpose bar and load a plate on each side, because the dumbbells only go up to 80 and I didn't feel like repping it out. So 90+weight of the handle

hip raises x18,15

Squat's up ten pounds, that's good. Front squat/RDL didn't go up in weight at all, but I a)got more reps out of the front squat and b)had MUCH better form on the RDL. So I'm still happy with today.

Thanks guys.

As I was unracking the bar for the second set of squats it slipped a little, and instead of reracking it like a smart person, I just did a little hop and got the bar up to where it should've been, then proceeded to do my set.
Today my back hurts any time I let my head fall forward or back. It's only on the left side, it's got to be either my traps or my levator scapulae because the pain depends on the position of my head. Not that that information actually does anything for me

Also, today is a self-declared half snow day. Meaning I'm skipping my first class and only going to my second class to get my test mark.
Winter is great.

Matthew, maybe youll have better luck with using Db's then me for strength. My chest got bigger no doubt, but dbs did not really help my regular bench. i feel its because you cannot use enough weight on them.

I agree with that to an extent, but I think the DB bench do still help the BB bench.

I hadn't been benching with a barbell in the last 7 months or so, but my bench still went up a fair bit doing DB Bench Presses. I did alot of OH pressing and dips though too, so maybe the DB Bench Presses were worthless, who knows

I still figure my Bench Press would be 20lbs higher had I benched with a barbell for those few months!
