The titan singles are nice, i have 2.. no complaints, not much they could really do wrong. Get one with a black ass if possible, its harder to judge if your butt comes up on the bench.

Ha. Good tip, but I think if you wear black they put a diff. color towell or something so that can't happen!
Should I start practicing a pause-on-the-chest bench press?

never seen the towel thing, i highly doubt it!
I would practice some reps paused, still do both. The pauses in powerlifting are usually not to bad ive found.

With the USPF on the bench, remember:
1) Keep your feet flat on the floor. Some feds allow you to come up on your toes but the USPF doesn't allow that.
2) Remember to hold the bar and wait for the "Start" command before lowering the bar to your chest.
3) I prefer federations that give you a "Lift" command when you've paused long enough but this one doesn't. So be sure to watch how long other lifters are pausing at the meet so you know how long you have to have the bar motionless on your chest before you lift. Frequently in meets like this, it's not a very long pause.

Friday, July 25
Smolov, day 3
Squats
warmups with bar, then 135
4 x 200
4 x 230
5 sets of 4 at 265
This was not a bad session- weights felt good, form felt good. Then, on the last set I started getting a shooting pain - it's in my side, towards the back. It's def. around the rib cage in my back, left side. I have no idea what has happened, I can only guess that since I was pushing out hard against my belt with my stomach I have injured my ribcage.
I have a long history of muscle strains / spasms in my back, but I don't think this is like that. I've never had pain in this area before.
I was going to bench after squats today and do some rowing tommorow, but that's out. I just hope I can get better in two days to squat Monday. Right now I get stabbing pain when I move my torso.

I just had to unload two freight trucks with 200 cartons of textbooks weighing 50-60 pounds each.
I am FUBAR.
I called the sports clinic here in town, but their back specialist just left so I was referred to urgent treatment. I don't need that, I don't think. I was hoping to see a sports doctor and get reassured that it's nothing too bad, but I guess I'll have to see how it goes this weekend.

Suck it up and finish Smolov!
Someone was bound to say that, so I had to get it out of the way. Seriously, I don't think you need urgent treatment, but I would load up on the anti-inflammatories, take it easy this weekend and see the back specialist on Monday if you still have pain. If you don't see a major improvement in the next day or 2 I would not attempt another heavy squat session on Monday.

Well, I'm starting to think it's not my ribs, but a muscle in my back. If that's the case, it's good news because I get this a lot and know what to do. I was / am worried it's different this time because the pain is in a different area and is much worse.
I read a joke on another forum- if this keeps up I'll have to make my special preworkout shake for Monday consisting of carnation instant breakfast, a dozen eggs, pure columbian cocaine, and rattlesnake venom.
But really, I'd be listed as doubtful for Monday at this point. I'll do the ant-inflams and ice and hopefully it'll get better.

Ah, I was way off!
I may try that- I'll be in around a pool a lot, so maybe I can loosen it up that way too.

Update- It's something in my ribs that's pulled / strained. I can bend straight over with no incident - bending right or left hurts, so I think even though the pain radiates through the left side of my back, it's actually the ribcage. I feel better today, but I still don't know about tomorrow.
