Do you really need to be fast in strongman? I mean, with yoke walks, deads, overhead presses, stones, i would imagine the weight would help. tire flips and farmers walks, probally not i suppose.
I cant imagine being 230 would slow you down, im weighing that now and i consider that 'in shape' lol.

yea speed is huge in strongman. Lots of placings come down to someone being faster than another in a show. There's a lot of really light guys doing some heavy weights so i don't know if bw is really everything anymore. LW guys doing stone runs up to 400, 200lbers running w/ 700lb yokes, 300-350lb farmers. I mean look at the lw pro shows and they're a lot of the times heavier than world's strongest man in their events. I believe the stone run in nationals last year was heavier than worlds.
if i'm gonna move up in weight, i just need to keep the conditioning up. It'll suck if i sit around all winter, gain 20lbs, and then go out and try and do conditioning stuff. haha

Makes sense, ill do a strongman comp one day. I see on NAS website most have some sort of deadlift (a few have the 2 inch bar deadlift with no straps! starting at 500lbs!) that would be fun.

i think the thick bar deadlift is kinda stupid. Lots of risk in tearing your bicep among other bicep intense events. You should do a contest though! Just make sure you get some training with the implements before the competition.
you can pretty much guarantee a contest will have a press, pull, and carry or drag in it.

8-7-08:
Back squats:
160x8
183x6
208x4
220x4 (this might be a rep pr. They felt EASY. i felt like i had at least 6-8 in me)
Front Squats:
144x5
164x4
173x3
183x3 (this might be a rep pr. they were hard)
good workout. finished in around 30 minutes. the way squats are going, i should be over 300 by the end of the year.

Very nice. I'm feeling extra weak after going through all the boys' logs today...

8-9-08:
Bench (OMG LOLZ):
115x5
135x5
145x5
these all felt easy, but my arms were shaking b/c i my cns and arms weren't used to benching. hahaha!! I think my pathetic bench pr for 5 reps is 155? so, not bad without benching for like a year.
Dips:
bwx8x5
Stones. I did these over the yoke bar since i don't have a platform yet. All were loaded to 50":
170x3
230x2 (i believe this was a PR for height. they felt pretty easy too, but felt gassed after them. Need to work on my conditioning using heavy implements.)
Cleaned up then:
Band Pullaparts: 2x20
Hammer Curls: 35x8x2
Felt good! The squats and pulls are really paying off, as i could tell with the stones.

gracias. You have nothing to feel weak about. your workouts have been looking strong as well!
And i figured i'll start doing benching for a few weeks as well. partially b/c of hypertrophy, and also because i wanna see how it works for my overhead when i periodize both w/ the Wendler method.

Hey, this question is for Jim.
I bought your 5/3/1 manual and i enjoy it. One question i have is if one was interested in strictly improving their overhead press (for strongman), how would you go about this?
I was considering using the 531 method for periodization on the overhead lift, and then on another day, just working on light 50-60% form and technique for push jerk, continuously working on improving my speed and form.
I know strongman's not your thing, but i was just wondering how you would alter this plan. Thanks
-----
Zach,
I would simply do the the sets/reps as noted but with the implement/technique that is used (or something very similar.) For example, the log press.
I would not do any speed work.

Did a thorough warmup before this. Lots of foam rolling on my IT band, hamstrings and glutes, and then lots of tennis ball rolling on my pecs and upper back.
Hang Power Snatches:
barxlots
65x1x3
75x1x4
80x1
85x1
these felt good. I'm taking the increases slowly to get my pec and shoulder flexibility back. These felt easy though, so i'll probably go 90-95 next week with a little more volume
Squats:
160x6
183x6
198x6
198x6
Fronties:
123x5
133x5
144x5
144x5
Standing Calf Raises:
110x2 sets
150x20
200x20
200x20 then 110x21. calves were pretty tired after this.
good workout. the last set of 198 were pretty damned hard. Going to be going for 232x2 on wed or thurs which is 95% of my old 1rm. Pretty pumped to be hitting the lower reps now.
