thanks Simon brahhh, i'll give it a try next time i deadlift.
Steve-o, what's up dude? I jacked my hip and lower back up after a deadlift session. My mobility sucked and supposedly the doctor said i had an inflamed bursa sac in my hip. It sucked big time, but things are 99% better now. Are you still doing strongman? Any competitions on the horizon?

nah, not stressing now, just getting set up for the initial blind date. Kinda stressful knowing virtually nothing about someone. It just felt like I had 0 sleep. I came home and pretty much crashed.

I haven't been doing much in the way of strongman lately. I jacked my hip up pretty good too... hi rep DLs. Pulled for 3 minutes straight. After that, I couldn't do anything without my hip hurting. Went and got an MRI on it after about 3 weeks of constant pain. Turns out I have what they called a 'benign bony island' on the interior portion of my femoral head. A 1cm tall lump of bone thats digging into my pelvis. If I externally rotate far enough, it actually opens my hip up enough to push it partially out of socket. I've been rehabbing and stuff for the last 4 or 5 months, but it still acts up.
I pretty much had to start from scratch with my DL. I'm only at about 80% of where I was before this popped up. But my squat is stronger than ever. And I'm doing a lot of judo and jiu-jitsu. In the next month or 2 I'll start working some strongman stuff back in if the hip lets me.
Glad to hear you're on the mend!

That's what I was asking and he totally deflected the question. Soooooo...how did it go fool?

So howd it go fool?
lolz. went ok, conversation went well, and i guess she had a good time (according to a text my boss got from her). I gotta say that she's probably one of the more interesting people i've gone out with in terms of having the same interests as me (art, music, etc). BUT, she goes away to school in a month, so the impression i got was that she didn't want to start anything which is pretty ghey.

that sucks man! I guess high rep deadlifts really do suck and should be avoided as they seem to really bring up all the problems.
I hear you on the deads. Mine sucks, but i think i am about at 65% of what i was before on my first workout back, so that's a good sign. Probably push it to 70-75 this week, then smaller jumps from there.
Also good to hear that you're doing judo and jiu jitsu. A friend of mine does that, and it gets you in condition quick, which i think will help you if you can start strongman stuff again.
What exactly have you been doing for your deadlift? Is the hip condition fixable or just avoidable?

The bad hip has a lot of external rotation compared to the other side, so I've been stretching the glute med, activating the glute max, and trying to tighten up my hip flexors.
As far as the actual DL goes, I tinkered with my form until I found something that didn't hurt. Sumo worked for a little bit, but as the weight got heavier and I pushed through to lock out, my hip had a tendency to pop out. But now I think I've found my sweet spot. My feet are 7 or 8 inches apart, toes slightly out, and with a grip where my index fingers are on the rings.
It's not really fixable at this point. I'm going to keep up with my rehab/prehab stuff, try and get it good and strong, and deal with it as long as possible. When I can't deal anymore, I'll have it taken apart and fixed. I obviously want to avoid this though.
You forgot an important detail about your date... she cute??

simon, yea man, i dunno. probably b/c my boss has been bugging both of us to go out for over a month. she could also be trying to be nice, and may not have had a good time, but we went to a movie after which we originally didn't plan. So, if she didn't have a good time, i figure she probably would have dipped before. Oh well, doesn't matter.

thanks man. Trying hard on squats and i'm trying real hard to hit proper depth and still maintain good back position. yea, i know, i haven't put in a light yet.
BTW, thanks to simon and frank. Moved my grip in closer on the pulls and it felt better.

Grip looks better, you could probably take it a tad in. Also no point leaning back so far at the lockout, and I've got a feeling it's not the safest thing for your back, just stand straight.
you basically sit down with the log, and then it's a clean+press in one simultaneous motion. It's coined after Poundstone's (nicknamed the viper) style of pressing when he has a lighter log for reps (300lbs or so)
Here's Matt Brouse demonstrating it..

Ha! I know i'm skinny now. But, i'm starting to hit weights that i was 30lbs ago, so it's all good.
Didn't realize that i was hyperextending my back? I'll make sure not to do that. I thought i avoided it.

i would bring your hands in even more, put them as close as you can without being on the smooth. Some people even put 1 finger on the smooth. I think the wider grip is giving an illusion of an over extended lockout

that's pretty much as close as i can get as my legs were hitting my inner arms. I think it's b/c i take a little wider stance too. Just feels more comfortable than a close stance.
