I've never given it much thought before, but do those poles rotate inside their anchors? They have to, right?

No they don't. That's one of the things I find the most mind-blowing is when they do those slow turns. It's hard enough to go around once and stop where and when you want to but going around multiple times, slowly and with control, and something else!
