Default Recommendation for lifting shoes?

Hey all, I was having a problem I was hoping someone would be able to help me with. I have never before bought a pair of shoes for lifting purposes only, but I've decided to go all out and toss away my scraped up Reeboks haha. I was wondering if anyone had any shoe choices that would be good for lifting (with regards of course to lower body training and oly lifting). I have heard some information about decent shoe choices out there (Otomix for example) but I don't know anyone who has tried a shoe they absolutely love and would suggest for others who are training. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Brianb

Depends on how you lift. Oly and some PLers with oly leanings use oly shoes to squat (Olers use them to pull as well), while the same PLers may use a wrestling shoe or Nike Frees to pull.

Other PLers prefer flatter shoes to pull and squat in (esp to squat if they squat wide).

Ultimately it depends on how you lift AND your foot mechanics/mobility/stability. That means dont be stupid and get a pair of chucks (just cuz thats whats you see some PLers doing) if you have serious pronation or supination issues.

Thanks for the response all... what I'm actually looking for is a good brand name to look into for lifting shoes (ie, one that has had a good reputation and different selection for different goals) as I already know what my musculoskeletal and ligamentous demands and limitations are. I'm just curious as to what shoes you can suggest or personally use. Thanks!

I'm not saying it necessarily is because of the shoes, but I just switched from runners to wrestling shoes, and the first time using them I pulled a PR.

Makes sense, wrestling shoes are pretty low to the ground.

I tried squatting in them once and almost died, they just dont match my style.

For deads these days I wear a pair of water shoes simply because I cant go barefoot in the contest and the water shoes are very thin and flat.

If you want "lifting shoes" the ones here are excellent (but pricey): http://www.dynamic-eleiko.com/

I usually lift in Adidas Sambas (flat no give bottom) or wrestling shoes.

Where do you live in Bethlehem, I live there too (PM me).

accident..

I was in cuba a while back on vacation and went to the gym there, i had just been swimming and had them on, forgot my runners. I did a couple sets of deads and figured they would work pretty good

they are like 2mm thick and very grippy.

I've bought the adistar Ironwork II 2004 at the gym where I train. They were the cheapest available, but yet costly at €110.
Online I've found them for €89 @ nerlinger.com

No wood though.. thought to wait for the costlier shoe when I'd be certain that I wanted to pursue weightlifting for longer than 6 months and am actually making decent progress.

This is the top shoe from Adidas @ 159 euro (in my gym €175).
Divide by 0.7 to get the approximate USD rates.

If your focus is Olympic Weightlifting, you have to get weightlifting shoes. If you have deep pockets, check out the adidas range from www.dynamic-eleiko.com

It is said that adidas suits those with narrow feet. Personally, I think I have wider than average feet and I own a pair of Adidas Adistar(Black and silver). Occasionally, the shoe feels a little too tight for comfort but other than that, it is serving me well.

Here are some other shoes:

I've got narrow feet mostly, except for the big toe that juts out. For this reason, whenever I put them on for regular workouts with an Olympic lift at the start, I prefer taking them off as soon as the big lifts are done (squatting & DLs also are a bit better with them) and get into my more comfy regular gym shoes that have more 'give' to them.
Keeping them on for over 1 hr definitely gets painful.

For those interested, we have replaced our Do-Win shoes with Risto Leather Weightlifting Shoes at XL Athlete. From their website: The Risto Weightlifting Shoe, hand made in the Americas, is one of the lightest and most durable leather weightlifting shoes on the market today. The shoe was designed with input from National Coaches in the America's, contains 100% high quality leather upper (with suede accents), solid wood heel (laquered or natural finish), double-stitched seams, a rubber sole, and more green manufacturing footprint (less transport, manufacturing uses even more local materials, less synthetic material in the shoe). I like the fact that they are available in several different colors: Black Blue Pink Red White So, if you're looking for shoes, I would definitely take a look at these. They're going for $118.

Ever heard of Do-Win?
Those are another brand again, sounds Chinese to me.

Text with it: this is the new 2008 Do-Win model. Do-Wins are a slightly wider and softer shoe than Adidas and will fit wider feet better.

I actually sort of like the pink shoes....except it might clash with some of my workout clothes. May just have to look into the black ones.

I don't do oly lifting, but I do deadlift and squats in vibram five fingers. I have wide feet though, and these are the only way I can avoid plantar fasciitis pain.

Dan John wears them too, so I'm not the only one, although my "fitness center" gym almost kicked me out for wearing them once. http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_...ve_never_tried

Some great suggestions! Thanks so much everyone! I'm going to read more about the Do Win's as well as check out the Five Fingers and see which one will work best for my biomechanics

Default Question about Chucks

Today is a "light" squat day, which I've been using to experiment a bit (box squats, stance width, etc.) I usually squat in Do-Win olympic shoes (actually, the red, white, and black ones posted above). Today, I thought I'd try it with my Chucks.

Backing the weight out, my foot slid around a bit. I racked the bar and checked the soles and they were covered with dust. I cleaned them off, did a couple of sets, and checked them again. As before, covered with dust and a bit slippery feeling. The gym is not particularly dirty, and I've never had that feeling with the Do-Wins.

Just curious if others have experienced this. If it matters, I don't have conventional Chucks. They're low top, black, monochrome (i.e., sole and toe are black).
