Default Olympic Lifting n00b question

Recently I was able to get a training session where I learned the basics of the clean and jerk. It was a very fun workout to be sure, and now I think I'd like to learn the basics of the snatch. To ensure a full body workout, what other exercises, if any would go with something like that? (Kind of a nebulous question I know, but I blame that on my ignorance of the field.)
Thanks in advance for replies.

you mean as assistance exercises to the snatch?

overhead squats and snatch high pulls are two.

Would you do them in the same workout your were doing (or attempting more like it) snatches?

yes you can. Lots of work should be put in form though for the main movement. Assistance exercises are just that, assistance.

I'm no expert, but doing cleans and snatches from the 'hang' position was good for me. You start standing with the bar, then get your momentum going down to the floor a little, then bring the weight up. Not sure if this is good for everyone, but I did both from hang positions for weeks before pulling from the floor.

I'm not an expert either, but I agree with dmw. I had to take a pre-requisite class called "Analysis of Weightlifting". The professor/coach was a competitive O-lifter and he taught us the O-lifts starting from the hang position then progressing to the ground. I personally felt that this was a lot easier to learn as oppose to starting from the ground.

A "typical" workout would be something like...
Day 1
c&j
clean pulls
fsquats
some form of pressing

Day 2
Snatch
Sn pulls
Back or OH squat
Pressing or Push Pressing

Then as one progresses pulls are typically removed are reduced in favor of more full lifts.
Day3
Snatch
C&J
Squat
RDL
Abs

Thanks for your responses everyone.

Ryan, since you're from PA, would you happen to know of any places in Northeastern PA that would teach Oly lifting?

the only registered clubs i found in that area were in Allegheny and Littlestown, but they look to be hours away from you. Ryan may know of some that aren't registered though...

There are tons of assistance exercises you can perform

I would recommend you purchase Dreschler's Weightlifting Encylopedia Book and Video. Another good source is the USAW's Club Coach Manual.

thanks

I didn't consider it an advertisement - I thought of it as an invitation. Who do I call to arrange a time to see the place? Also when's a good time? If you want to PM me the details, feel free. Thanks for the invite.
