really off topic, eh?

Our one year old mutt just won't seem to stop going in the same spot in the house. I'm at my wits end here. He goes out a lot, I walk him at least twice a day, but he still does it.

Help!

Send him outside as soon as you wake up and after every meal. Also clean that area really good, maybe using vinegar. Some dogs will go in the same spot because they smell something that is already there.

There are several things, take the advise of above, after naps, after eating, etc. and, just like a child, reinforce with praise when he does the right thing.

However, the one thing that is sticking out like a sore thumb is, if he is going in the same spot, it is scent driving him there. You must eliminate the odor to stop that. Keeping his territory marked, if you will.

Go before him and leave a huge surprise on his favorite spot. That ought to send him a message.

how about that? the NY guy asking me to leave a "Cleveland" steamer!

well, I just hit it with the carpet cleaner, going to do it again in the morning. I'm going to look around tonight too for something to get "his scent" out so maybe that will deter him.

I did get something productive out of it at least. After I ran the cleaner, I cranked up some circa Bon Scott AC/DC and hit the iron. My arms are too spent to beat the dog even if I wanted too (not that I do that. don't want the spca after me).

Is the surface wood or carpet? There are sprays that will offend the dog.

Has he been doing this all along, or is it a recent thing? When I pet is PO'd they'll do this, we had a cat that would pee on the bed when he was upset.

when we go away our dogs will crap in the house afterwards as a "thanks for leaving me at the kennel" present. as soon as the present is found they are put in their cage even if they just came out - it takes about 2 poops for them to realize that staying in the cage isn't worth it and they relieve themselves outside. you can spray the area with bitter apple (you can get it at any pet supply store) - not only does it stop them from chewing an area, the scent usually drives them away from the spot as well.

Do you have a kennel????? If not you must have one... let them sleep there and everything else you can think of. The kennel isnt supposed to be for punishment but a safe haven like a kids room. he sleeps there, as soon as you let him out of the kennel, take him outside. He stays there when your a bit to busy to watch what he is doing, as soon as you let him out take him outside. after he eats play with him, wait about an hour and a half or so and then take him outside. DONT PLAY WITH HIM OUTSIDE cause then thats what he thinks he is there for not to go poo but to play. make sure you praise him every time he does go potty though and every time you put him up make sure you say the same thing every time. I got my dogs trained to when i say "kennel up" and i snap my fingers they go straight in i dont even have to close the gate and they wont come out. but they know that if they are good they get a treat and i will play with them.

If they do go poo and I catch them doing it... thats where punishment comes in. I take the dog over to his business and point his face to it (not rub it in) and say NO NO NO and a small tap on the butt, nothing to hurt but just to let him know that he did something wrong and i say kennel and walk him over to it. shut the gate and no treat. NO matter how much he wines i wont pay him no attention for at least an hour. Then as soon as i open the kennel i take him right back out side and say go potty.

Its mainly about practice with the pooch. it doesnt matter how many times you take him out it matters that he knows what he is supposed to do. rewarding is the key also.

Well thats what works with my dogs. like gina said CRATE TRAINING is the way to go, no matter how old the dog is

There is this stuff I use called Nature's Miracle...in a spray bottle. It should get rid of the scent he is smelling. It's worked pretty well for me.

One of the main reasons I don't own a dog is that they are nothing more than poop factories. Sorry, but dogs don't understand a soft tap on the butt. If you want to condition them to not do something, learn something from Pavlov... make it extrememly unpleasant for them when they get out of line.

I hear you JP, I was against it for sure, but the wife and kids can plead with the best of them.

Jenn, TG (Good to see you!) - thanks, I'll run over to Petco and see if they have it. Appreciate the info Cherihan and JJ too.

Cherihan and the others have some good ideas here. I'd also recommend placing a doggy diaper on the floor where he goes if it is always in the same spot. While you are trying to get him to go outside, you can also easily cleanup his messes. If he doesn't learn to go outside, you have taught him to only go on this diaper. The next step is to slowly move the diaper twards and out the door.

I recently got a new dog (about 6 months old). We used the "How to Talk Dog" DVD and we've been really succesful.

Though it's easier to train them as a puppy, what you should do is after they eat, take them outside and don't play with them. Wait until they pee or poop, and when they do say something like "do your business" or "pee-pee poo-poo" just pick something and stay with it. Once they're done, take them inside and play with them. After a short while they'll realize what you're saying and the faster they go the faster they get to play. We let our dog out and say "do your business" and she walks to her part of the yard and goes. Then she comes back to play.

Dogs don't associate peeing or pooping the way we do. It's a way for marking there territory. Hell, they probably think it's wierd we don't pee in the door way before we leave the house to prevent others from taking it as their own. Dogs don't really understand locks too well. But they like to eat and play, so use that to your advantage.

Actually, the best thing the Bondgirl and I have found is to simply use corn starch. You clean up the area with water where the dog has done its business, leaving the area only slightly moist, then sprinkle corn starch over the entire area plus some. Once the corn starch dries, vacuum. You may need to reapply for stain control, especially for vomit or diarrhea, but the first time normally gets urine and poop right up the first time, and it pulls the smell out of the carpet and the matting. It's also a lot cheaper than anything at the petstore.

Cherihan's suggestion of a kennel is a fantastic one, but there are a few flaws in her suggestion. First of all, you should never ever hit your puppy, even if it is a little TAP. The pooch is intelligent enough to hear the change in your vocal tone. Also, NEVER put the pooch in the kennel after it's pooped in the house. Should you immediately catch the animal doing its business inside, firmly tell it "NO", point its face to the area, and immediately take the animal outside, set it down and tell it "goos dog" in an upbeat tone. The dog will eventually learn that doing it's business inside is "NO" while doing it's business outside is "GOOD".

There's one more thing you can try since the dog insists on going in the same spot time and time again. Put it's food in that spot. Trust me. It'll learn real quick that it doesn't want to poop there anymore. Now, I can't guarantee that it won't go somewhere else in the house, but you will get it to stop going there.

Actually, I've got a really good primer at home on crate training puppies, if you'd like it. Let me know and I'll forward it to you this evening.

Good luck!

TennesseeGentleman,
Yup that's the guy. Rick and Bubba is where I heard about them. The guy who runs it sure knows what he's talking about. He has several small things he shows you that make a world of difference.

Charger,
My Lab that I had for 10 years got ill and suddenly past away the first of December (I miss my running buddy). But, I have a 9 week old Lab puppy now. Did you by the DVD online, or locally, and do you really need that "special" leash?

this one I've been doing, as well as restricting access to his "favorite places", as well as making sure he is walked before bedtime.

Here is a gross trick, but it really works. Right before you take the dog out to do its business, insert an infant suppository into its rectum and quickly take him/her to the spot where they are supposed to go. The dog will immediately have a BM and after a few days of this, the dog will know exactly what he/she is going outside for. While training a dog, I would do this in the morning after meals and before bed over a weekend and that would pretty much do the trick.

TennesseeGentleman,
I bought it online at http://www.howtotalkdog.com/. And yes you probably should get the lead that they sell. It comes as a package deal anyway. The lead is pretty nice and for some of the training techniques it requires a lead the is round instead of flat.

I highly recommend the DVD. They say it can take a few weeks to get to you, but we got ours in about 3 days. Also the younger your puppy is the better. They say you should start as soon as the dog's been weened, but everything worked well for our dog and she was 6 months old.

I remember that we housetrained our German Shepherd puppy when I was a kid by wiping up his accidents with a cloth and then putting the cloth outside in the yard. Every once in awhile, we would bring him outside and let him sniff the cloth, which would cause him to use the bathroom. It didn't take long for him to get the idea.

Of course, they unlearn all of this when they become old, incontinent, and senile like our 16 year-old blind/deaf dachshund.
