I have good experience and knowledge in my field, but I knoiw that just doesn't translate well on my current resume. Anyone ever use one of those services? Worth the $150 that most charge? Anyone hiring ?

I never have, but the college I went too still does free resume critiques for me, and helps me re-write as necessary. See if a local university has a career services center that could help you out. Probably much cheaper.

try one of the computer programs that do it for you, all you have to do is fill it in. I am thinking of doing it too.

Sorry no help here. My sister is an HR exec and I have her look at mine before I send it out. The hard part for me is not the resume. it's the cover letter.

I read about 30 people's resumes at business school as an advisor and have read a lot of business resumes at work for job seekers.

The danger is that the template resumes look a lot alike and say very little.

150 bucks vs. getting the job you want...might be worth the cost. Or just have as many people read it as you can.

I had about 15 people critique my resume until I came up with my final version..

I used a template in MS Word for my resume. It does look a little generic (as mentioned above), but the fancy blue tinted paper puts me over the top.

I think I'll ante up and see what a service can do for me. I've had mine posted for a few months now, barely a nibble really. If it bares some fruit, I'll share it with the group.

I think I'll hit the campus too, and compare resumes too - one with what the service can do for me, and the other with the assistance of the school.

Cranes White Bond Paper. It's not all that much more expensive to go with the best.

I should have specified:

I do use parchmant paper. It just has a blue-ish grey tint to it. It's really light. Old school with a twist.

At the very least I would invest in a couple of books on writing resumes.

I as well would recommend staying away from programs that generate it.

Also paying the money to get someone to critique it does just that, gets it critiqued. Next time you want it done you pay again. The whole give a man a fish vs teaching him to fish.

I'd rather spend money learning how to do it.

Og.

I hear what you're saying Og. I guess a quick fix seems more attractive to me right now though. Busy with school, work , kids, etc.

I tried using www.10minuteresume.com -- it says it's free but it's not. I was helping a friend, and she ended up going on campus to get some help with it - and now i keep getting spam email from the stupid resume website.

Yeah, I'm going to head over to the campus for sure this weekend. "10Minute" doesn't sound like a lot of time could be put toward it anyway. Sucks about the spam though...
