Okay, maybe it worked, but I can't imagine this is an ideal routine for others to follow:

JS Got Back

The trainer behind Jessica's behind
By William Keck, USA TODAY
Dukes of Hazzard star Jessica Simpson didn't fit into those super-tight, super-short denim Daisy Dukes by chowing down on deep-fried catfish and gumbo while on location in Baton Rouge shooting the film version of the popular TV series, which opens in theaters Aug. 5.

Rather, Simpson, 25, hired trainer Mike Alexander, 27, her old pal from J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas, to change her diet and whip her into shape — even before she landed the role late last summer.

"She was a dream client at a very opportune time," concedes Alexander, who graduated from Baylor University with a degree in health and fitness in 2001. On the advice of the Simpson family, Alexander relocated to Los Angeles in 2003 and stayed with Simpson's mother, Tina, and father, Joe, who had been his youth minister back in Texas. He describes Joe as a "big brother."

"Jessica wanted more of a bump for her rear end instead of a flat butt," says Alexander, who works at Beverly Hills' Sports Club LA. He trained Simpson there nearly every day — one hour with weights and a half-hour of cardio. To achieve a toned butt and legs, Simpson took on a rigorous program of lunges and squats while holding 7½-pound weights.

Alexander helped chisel her back, arms, shoulders and chest. "Most of the stuff she wore was sleeveless or strapless," he says. "We did a lot of bicep curls, 10-pound elbow cable extensions, incline press and shoulder raises."

Alexander lived in a house with Simpson during the three months she was in Baton Rouge last fall shooting Dukes. "I ate every meal with her so I could tell her what to order," says Alexander, who encouraged Simpson to eat grilled chicken, seared fish, broccoli and asparagus. She avoided bread baskets brought to the table and declined extra sugar for her iced tea. Free desserts brought to the table were refused.

"Once word got out where Jessica was staying in town, neighbors began dropping off fresh baked goods," Alexander recalls. "But Jessica remained incredibly disciplined." After shooting wrapped, though, Alexander says Simpson celebrated with chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes and a hot fudge brownie sundae.

Phaedrus- what type of radio station do you work for? They were talking about this exact article on FoxSports Radio this morning.

They went over her training regimen, but mostly, they were talking about how hot Jessica is and speculating about whether or not she had an affair with her trainer.

You know, sports...

Anyways, you don't think that 15 lb squats will get you nice and tone?? My guess is that her weight lifting sessions were actually more of an aerobic workout, only without the class full of spandex clad women.

It doesn't look horrible to me. Reading a similiar article in the Houston paper yesterday (the trainers family now lives in Houston)it struck me that she had a good approach. She ate clean and did solid exercises.

I work for a news-talker, but our daily rag had an article lifted from USA Today today. Radio is a guy's locker room behind the scenes regardless of format.

D, I agree that the compound movements looked solid, but the loads and isolation exercises concern me. Where are the compound pulls? I guess the lack of balance in the program bothers me.

Well, looks like she trained the areas that are most visible in the movie, and strength and balance be damned. And when they say "toned"... they just mean that her arms appear to have no fat... maybe a slight curve of muscle... not ripped. (I know you know that, I'm just making a point.)

And for somebody coming from no lifting experience, extremely light squats and lunges, done high-rep and consistently... that could add a nice rump IMO. Her bf% is probably so low that any muscle at all protrudes as "shapely". And that, of course, is the key (the diet).

Agreed.

I'm sure that her trainer built her up with this program to look exactly how she ended up looking. (Which is not half bad)

If only they would print her logs we'd really know the whole story. From my perspective it was nice to see that an exercise like squat was mentioned in the same breath as female.

Dang, did you have to post that photo, ODB? My fond memories of adolescent fantasies are ruined...
