i had them back from 6th to 8th grade (6yrs ago). those metal ones, not like those clears ones they have now. and yeah, my parents paid for them. got lucky. hehe
Hehe I got mine off a week ago - That's why I posted the 'teeth whitening' topic. I'm currently using some carbamide peroxide gel for post-braces whitening. When it comes to braces, I didn't have the money for Invisalign so I dealt with having railroad tracks across my teeth for 2 years (exactly) since the day they were put on. I can honestly say I didn't smile for 2 years but it was all worth it in the end:] my teeth are le purty.
Capp, I had them in 8th grade as well..but my teeth felt like they were starting to move at 25..so I went to the ortho and he gave me a retainer to wear at night since I told him braces weren't an option. In a month they were back to perfect.
I believe that you can go this route, it may take a little longer depending on how much correction is needed, but you can wear the retainer as much as possible while still taking it out if going to dinner, on a date with Russ, etc.
I had braces for 4 years but that was back in elementary and jr. high. My only advice is go for it because if your self-conscious about it now you probably will be 10 years from now, and it is worth a year or two of pain, or being short on cash. Just my 2 cents. BTW if any of you have seen the simpsons episode where it shows the progression of how Lisa would look if she didn't get braces, yeah I looked like that.
Thanks for the input. Everybody I've asked said it was worth it. Now I just have to figure out if I want to part with the $$$. I think I'd be happy in the end, but it's definately a weighted decision...
erowan--my dentist suggested the retainer (and filing between the teeth) but then questioned if there would be enough room so sent me to the orthodontist instead.
....hmmmm date with Russ. Russ AND Craig are in Toronto I lived in Goosebay when I was 3 or 4. I remember the snow was taller than me and we had a frozen pond to skate on.
Kaiser - ouch...how perceptive you are. But in my defense I've been thinking about it for a couple of years and just now got around to getting it checked out. Think it has to do with my 'egotistical' 30's (around 31 I realized I can (and will) do what I want) more than the fitness thing. Don't know why it took me so long to figure that out...
No defense needed. When I went into my dentist about 4 years back to have him fix one incisor I didn't like, he asked if I was starting to get vain in my old age. I think it happens to everyone as they hit their 30s. Plus, as you mentioned, you have the financial capacity to do what you want.
My wife calls it vanity - I call it the realization of aging. For the first time I have smile wrinkles around my eyes. And gray hair popping up. Ahhhh..... I accept it by thinking, oh well, I never was good looking anyway, so it's not far to fall.
i had braces from 2nd grade all the way through high school on and off and of course retainers and night gear (you can get certain radio stations if you happen to catch the eclipse right). i also had four teeth pulled- it was great while it lasted but about 2-3 years after the braces came off my teeth started shifting. i was given retainers again and told to wear them 24/7 and they filed my teeth. if they file anymore there won't be teeth left and i hate that, and the retainers are a pain-- i've pretty much given up! they said the only other way to get my teeth straight is to put braces back on! (i don't think so-- i shall live with crooked teeth)
good luck!! get a good orthodontist! make sure they talk to you the whole time instead of just coming in, looking, and doing their stuff
Thanks Java(ps are we related? ) That helps balance out the stories.
Kaiser - your dentist told you you were old 4 years ago??? I guess it is a combo of all like you say, but I was referring to brain independance once I got a little older. Don't fret about the wrinkles, it only makes men more distinguished.

I had a friend (now deceased) who had a great line... what doesn't turn gray, turns loose!
I thought it was ironic that there was a thread regarding dental care this morning. I think the angle that this was intended is purely aesthetic but I was thinking this morning about dental care as a part of overall health. We focus a lot on our bodies and what we put in them but I was wondering how this same group does when it comes to dental hygiene? I've been pretty lucky so far but think I'm going to get a bit more strict.
I'm going to echo what Q said. My dentist told me last month that straight teeth are a part of overall health. You will be less likely to have teeth issues as you age(IE You will keep them longer, etc)with them straight than without. He recomended that everyone should pursue the issue independent of age.
But like Capp said, it's hard to part with those dollars since I'm not aware of a dental plan yet that covers adults.

Well, I'm gonna do it. Made an appt yesterday, shortly after reading your post, Deserve. Yes, overall health is my goal
Now I'm thinking of what I should give up in return. I'm sooo cheap. My dental plan makes a dent in the cost, but not enough to make me want to do it without hesitation.

That sounds nice , but I haven't saved you any $$ yet. How about 'Goodbye Four Seasons, hello Motel 6' when you travel.
Well most of it is in the freezer. Do you recommend that I diversify and put some under my mattress?
Would you believe the lady actually said I could take out a line of credit to pay up front to save 7% over TWO years? Some poor fool is probably paying 8% to save 3.5% a year.
I say mileage perks on credit card are more worth it.
I'm going to learn to play nintendo in the waiting room and enjoy the nice view during my office visits, since I'll be paying to support it.
Another option would be to take up poker. You can learn to play on the internet and there seems to be large payouts in thses tournaments being shown on TV
