I just got confirmation from nbc and wbns that there were 7 people shot at a Damageplan show in Ohio tonight. Metal guitar legend Dimemag Darrell (used to be with Pantera) was one of the ones shot.

Apparently some guy went nuts, jumped on stage and just started shooting. 3 dead, 4 hurt.

Can't believe it! Pantera was always was one of my favorite bands in high school...

His brother, the great drummer Vinnie Paul, is the other band member dead...!!!

I learned how to play drums because of him!

The third person dead is apparently the shooter. Bastard got off easy.

[Sorry if I'm ranting. I know there aren't many metal fans here.]

That is some fucked up shit...

As a former metal fan, I was never really a fan of pantera. In fact, I couldn't stand them, but as a fan of music in general i really really appreciate how sad that is.

Sorry guys

Dimebag was a legend. I'm more of a classic rock guy, but I have the utmost respect for guys like dimebag, he could swing an axe, that is not arguable. Sucks to have something like happen from some ignorant a-hole.

that's totally fucked up.

i remember seeing pantera years ago and Darrell was taking solo cups full of beer and tossing them underhand 30-40 yards into the crowd. people were able to catch them with very little spillage and drink'em down. good times.

RIP Dimebag

Damn.... what can one say in the face of insanity. Thats just horrible.

Besides being good musicians Dimebag (and Vinnie too?) were down to earth hombres.

That sucks.

Looks like this chump was going after the band. Guess we'll find out what's up with that.

Some good news (kinda): Vinnie is alive after all!
I don't know if he's hurt, but apparently he ran out the back of the stage, so the original report was that the dude shot at him, he disappeared, and everyone thought he was dead. Not so.

The sad twist to that is this means he witnessed his kid brother, Dimebag, get plugged 5 times and die.

Two fans were killed as well.

RIP Dimebag.

No fvcking motive known. I really cannot fathom why some people value human life so little.

it really suk...there's speculating that the fucked up dude was angry about pantera splitting up and dimebag and vinnie starting this new band (Damageplan, as some of u mite no)...so, this asshole decided that, instead of getting over it like thousands of other pantera fans have, he was going to try and kill dimebag and vinnie for it.

Brand New-Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades: This is so messed up.

"If that's the reason, it'll go down as the stupidist reason for a murder in the history of stupid reasons."

It wouldn't be the first time. John Lennon?

I think people who get that upset when bands break up are pretty pathetic.

Yeah, I know about Lennon, but as much as I love Pantera and Dimebag... they weren't the Beatles.

Really, though, what was so stupid is that Phil Anselmo was the one who left Pantera. Dimebag and Vinnie were the ones left in the lurch!

btw...weird little coincidence perhaps(???)...
does the date December 8th ring any bells about the murder of a famous musician??? that's right-it was 24 years to the day.

It's all messed up, I still listen to Pantera.

Although I wouldn't count myself a fan, I enjoyed their music enough that I have included several of their tracks on most of my playlists.

Crazy people suck.

have you seen this recent interview with Phil saying that Dimebag Darrell should be severely beaten?

Yeah, Phil's been running his over-sized redneck mouth for years now. I loved what he did with Pantera, but he's got to be one of the most arrogant assholes out there.

I'm sure Dimebag got out of line plenty of times. After all, he was a metal guitarist who prided himself on how much beer he drank! But that's the kind of stuff that should be left between them. It was in the past, they both had new bands... why couldn't he just shut the hell up?

I hope he feels suitably embarassed right now.

Taken from Pantera.com:

Dec. 15, 2004 - PHILIP ANSELMO: I Never Got A Chance To Say Goodbye, And It Kills Me -

Keith Spera of The Times-Picayune has issued the following report:
The onstage killing of former bandmate "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott has left ex-PANTERA vocalist and north shore resident Phil Anselmo distraught and questioning his own future.

In a transcript of a videotaped statement released to the media Tuesday, Anselmo said: "People want my reaction to what happened. This is about Dimebag Darrell, purely Darrell. It's not about me or some . . . psycho that happened to destroy the most beautiful person, one of my best friends in the world."

Abbott, 38, was shot and killed Dec. 8 while performing with the hard rock band DAMAGEPLAN at a Columbus, Ohio, nightclub. Three other people, including DAMAGEPLAN's chief of security, died after Nathan Gale, 25, opened fire with a handgun. Gale was an ex-Marine and metal fan reportedly angered by the band PANTERA's breakup. He was shot and killed by a police officer responding to 911 calls.

Anselmo and Abbott spent 15 years touring the world together in PANTERA.

PANTERA didn't achieve widespread success until Anselmo, a New Orleans native, joined about 1989. PANTERA sold more than 10 million albums, collected two Grammy nominations and inspired legions of aspiring hard rock bands. But by 2002, Anselmo, Darrell Abbott and his brother Vinnie Paul Abbott, the band's drummer, had become estranged as Anselmo devoted more time to other projects.

In 2003, they confirmed that PANTERA had disbanded, as the two camps exchanged accusations in the hard rock press. Anselmo was at home on the north shore last week when Abbott was killed. As Ozzy Osbourne, Paul Stanley of KISS, Brian May of QUEEN and other rock icons memorialized Abbott, a devastated Anselmo made no public comment until Tuesday.

Anselmo's statement says that "the heavy metal media destroyed PANTERA." He laments that he "never got a chance to say goodbye (to Abbott) in the right way and it kills me, and I'm so sorry."

Anselmo traveled to Dallas for Abbott's funeral. But he ended up not attending "to respect the (Abbott) family's wishes, and they do not want me there. I believe I belong there, but I understand completely."

"I wish his family the least grief they could ever have, and I know it's impossible. Just bless his family, bless his friends. I love him like a brother loves a brother. . . . I'm so sorry to his family and everyone else who was senselessly killed in Columbus, Ohio."

His statement hints at an uncertain professional future.

"This has changed the entire world, and this is the last you'll be seeing of me for a long time.

I've been watching my pantera home videos lately and I was just sitting around...thinking about how much of a tragedy it was that metal lost one of it's greatest brothers of all time. He definately loved what he did and his music will live on FOREVER! Everytime I and millions of others crank up pantera to the max his legacy grows stronger.

Miss you dime, r.i.p.
