Though you already may be sick of hearing/reading about it (in which case, feel free to insult me or just go to another thread ), the MLB's steroids issue is really just getting started. Thought you may be interested in a couple of items fueling the fire:
--Before 2000, in the first 14 years of his career, Barry Bonds never hit a single home run measured at 450ft. or more. Since 2000, in the last five years, (when he turned 36), he has hit 21 home runs over 450 ft.
--Quote from Padres second baseman Mark Loretta “"It's unfortunate to blame the union. That's an easy cop-out. We're dealing with a subset of athletes -- baseball, football, track and field -- that use performance-enhancing stuff. That's not new. We're dealing with grown men who can make their own choices for their own lives."
RedLefty comment: Smart statement, Mark! Way to go! It's not like those other sports have testing or anything... they just let these grown men make their own (illegal) choices, right?
--Sammy Sosa told SI’s Rick Reilly in 2001 that his incredible muscle gain was due to a bad wisdom tooth that was fixed, allowing him to eat more. He also said he works out “every day, seven days a week. Sometimes at two or three in the morning.” Sosa was 33 years old at the time.
RedLefty comment: Sosa's probably right, he didn't need steroids. He had a fixed tooth and a corked bat on his side already. That should help him recover from those everyday workouts.

is it really possible to add 50 pounds of muscle in your 30's?

Those pics are outrageous!!! The size difference is crazy...it's like looking at two different people that...one is an endo and one is a meso. The McGwire one is crazy. Great link.
actually, mcgwire is the least noticeable to me! the guy did hit 47 homers as a rookie...so he's always had tons of power..
the giambi one though...doesn't even look like the same guy
no, but all were in the major leagues (except Giambi)...
look, give everyone the benefit of the doubt..say they are 22 in the pictures and 36 later on...
how likely is it to actually gain 50 pounds of muscle? In case you didn't get the news in australia, four of those guys all admitted to being on roids...its just more of a 'wasn't it obvious by looking at them' thing. Bond's head size has increased two full hat sizes in the past 5 years and your head is supposed to stop growing at 15...so its weird for it to grow at 38 unless something is up..

Giambi looks like a Little Leaguer in the first pic. Sosa also looks skinny in the 'before' pic. Mind you, there are at least 10 years between the before and after pics in most (if not all) of those cases. I saw pics of Giambi with the A's in the late 90's compared to recent pics with the Yanks, and the difference is huge.

Wasn't it the flax seed oil that had that effect on him. He thought so, at least......
I can see it now. Flax seed oil will become the code word for 'roids in gyms across N. Ameerica.

In ten years it is not extremely difficult to add 50 lbs of muscle. That is only five pounds per year. I think when you see that kind of gain in two to three years, then you have a lot more doubts that it is natural gain.
I had the unfortunate opportunity of watching Shefield when he wore a Brewer's uni. He was only 18 or 19 in that pic. If you saw a pic of me at 19 versus where I am now, you'd think I was up to no good too!!
Of all the guys in the pics, I would say him and Mcgwire are the guys I would guess to be more natural. Bonds is turning into a freak!!
Boone is a neon sign of potential juice to me, because he had almost all his muscle gain in a single offseason, right after the 2000 season ended. He had only signed a one-year contract with Seattle and knew he would be a free agent, then this small-framed infielder comes in with 20 extra pounds of muscle, supposedly just from working out and eliminating, "sauce, all kinds of sauce" from his diet (USA Today, 7/11/01).
He was 32 years old in 2001, and was a career .250 hitter with decent power (high of 24 homers in 1998 with the Reds). In 2001, the newly comic-book muscled Boone hit .331 with 37 home runs (a record for AL 2nd basemen). He went from being a solid infielder with some pop to batting cleanup in the All-Star game... in one season, at age 32.
