My community theatre's production of "Harvey" opened this past Friday night and I'm playing the role of Dr. Chumley, a pompous, arrogant, middle-aged psychiatrist. Now, I wasn't originally cast in the production, but when the performer who was cast as Dr. Chumley dropped out, the director called me and asked if I could help them out. While I really do enjoy working with this director, I've never really known what she thought of my abilities. During the rehearsal process, she's very quick to criticize and slow to give out compliments, but almost every director I've ever worked with is like that. I've always thought that she believed I had some smidge of talent because while other performers would get some serious notes about what they were doing wrong, I very rarely ever received even a mention after rehearsals.
Well, after Sunday's matinee she gave us all little "Thank you" notes that included some words of wisdom for some, advice for others, and some form of compliment for each of us. In my note, she opted not to give any advice or impart any words of wisdom, but she did say the following:
"I would just say Thank You and shut up, but I have never been one for brevity.
You are one of those rare actors that instinctively know that for a comedy to be truly funny the actor has to push hard and play the edge; otherwise they won't laugh. Push too hard and they really will not laugh. You find the edge and skate it.
Thank you for your time and talent."
I'm still awestruck by what she said. Talk about validation of one's talents!

Congrats!!
Hey I know you're coming to the city sometime soon - you should definitely try and catch a show (Broadway is good, but typically the edgy stuff is off-off broadway (sometimes off-broadway)).
We've got tickets to "Wicked". Plus, we are going to get tickets for the Rockettes Christmas show and we've got to figure out how to get tickets for the sold-out performance of The Foreigner with Matthew Broderick.
Any ideas on that last one?

Dude! That is very cool. Congratulations on being validated...twice. She called you for the part AND she complimented you on your performance. What's next?

Nice, I've heard really good things about Wicked from people who've seen it recently. Foreigner? Scratch that and catch Avenue Q! (and take me with you! )

Yeah. Kind of like last night. I scored a key goal in the 3rd period of my beer league hockey game. I was quickly reminded that things were now even, as I managed to put one in my own net last week while trying to clear the puck around the boards in my own zone (caught the heel of my stick)

You're not suggesting some sort of "mind altering" experience, are you?
I could have used that sort of experience after putting it in my own net

You're mixing me up with Brad
Hey russ, did you straighten out that "your goal, my goal" thing yet? Seems like that might be an important one for the game of hockey!
Head over to JPF and hit the tequilla with the owner until you both pass out (hopefully, you'll still be in Arkansas when you awake)
Hmmmmm, JP, me and a bottle of Tequila? Even GPS won't be able to locate us when we come out of our stupor!!!

No dice.
On a side note, it would make me really happy if, at some point in time, you could make your avatar Q-Bert. My birthday is 4/30, so you could aim for that
