I do not miss chicago winters Kaiser! Never again! I freeze my bootay off! I lived there for 17 years and I don't think I could live there again. *pout* altho I do miss chi town, and white chistmas'
We're getting the remnants today. You'd think that we friggin' moved to Seattle. We're all hoping that we don't get the 17+ tornados that Ivan brought us.

I used to love the winter and change of seasons, but when I was a kid, it would remain white on the ground for 3 to 4 months. Now it snows, melts, and everything is dingy grey/brown. Utterly depressing. So I've got to agree with you there.
But, other than Hawaii, every state has its downsides, as you mentioned. You also mentioned your Hawaaiian background...did you ever live there? A good friend of mine moved out there and has never looked back - -he spent a number of years on Lanai, then Maui, and now Oahu. Other than the perfect weather everyday, he says everyone is more laid back, smile a lot more, and are just happier than Chicago. I've been there 3 times and if I could move anywhere in the world, it would be Maui. Of course it helps that I get treated better by the locals because of my skin color - 'reverse discrimination' as my friend puts it - if you're not a haole, it's all good as far as the locals are concerned. So when I get very rich, or retire, I wanna go there.
But Chicago has the best weather for about 5 months a year - summer and fall are great here. And the lake... can't beat that playground!
I hate it when the local TV breaks in with a potential tornado and they use your neighborhood name as a reference point for the location! (Actually happened today)
Luckily, it did not touchdown......

Yes Kaiser, I lived in Kaua'i for about 4 years
2 of those year on the coast guard base, and the other 2 in south shore. I have visited Maui many times, and the capital. I love it there. I am a Polynesian-Hawaiian, and native mix. I would love to live there now, but it is so expensive!!! Importing everything is like crazy expensive, unless you want to live off of pineapples. Haha. Honestly though I love Florida. This hurricane season is rare, and the bay area hasn't been hit since like 1906 and still going strong with the record!! We just got part of the winds and tropical storm. No biggie.
Ahh, Kaua'i is gorgeous. I spent part of my honeymoon there. Na paali coast.
Expensive is a state of mind. A story from one of my trips to HI: my friend who lives there now pointed to a hillside and said, "See that multi-million dollar house?" and pointed to a large pink mansion on the hill. I nodded yes, and then he continued, "See that shack with the tin roof right next to it?" indicating one of the many shacks you see in Maui's backcountry. I nodded affirmatively again and he said, "Both owners get up and look out onto the same incredible view and feel the same great sunshine. So who has the better dwelling?" I understood his point. If all of mine and my wife's family weren't here in Chicago, I'd move out there in a heartbeat and even work a meager tourist job just to live in paradise. No kidding. And I am trying to set up a business venture there, with my aforementioned friend's wife, so I can have an excuse to head out.
Florida? Isn't that where when you die, they don't bury you but put you in a big car and let you drive around with your blue hair peeking over steering wheel while going 20 miles under the speed limit?
HAHAHA!!!! That is not ALL of florida. I live on the beach, a more tourist area aka MTV spring break hot spot etc. Inland is more old people, "snow birds" as we call them.
LOL yea, q-tips, and anything else that pop's in our heads when they cut us off going 25 in a 45, driving without a license for the past 20 years. GRRRrr
