I have a Dell Dimension Desktop (2350). Neither me nor my wife have been able to access email and some downloads are blocked. I have contacted my internet service provider and the modem is working. I contacted Dell and had no luck with technical support. MSN and Comcast email are blocked. I tried antispyware such as lavasoft and the microsoft beta. I can't get it to work. I know some of you work in IT any ideas?
I also reran some of the microsoft drivers as advised by Dell but have not reloaded the whole system and started over.

What do you mean by "blocked"?

List error messages, etc.

You are being too vague.

Did you install the XP service pack 2 recently? That includes a firewall and pop-up blocker that may causes problems with certain websites. If the websites are being blocked by the pop-up blocker you should see a small line along the top edge of Internet Explorer stating as such. Along with the message there should be a button to "allow" pop-ups for that particular site.

Otherwise go to the Control Panel -> Windows Firewall and turn off the firewall temporarily to see if that makes a different.

That's about all I can suggest until we can see more detail...

I did install the service pack. I don't see an indication that the message is blocked. What I see is a message that the site has not been found. It is one of those generic screens with listings of other sites. This happens both for hotmail and for comcast email. It doesn't happen if I try to log onto a normal internet site such as this.

listings for other sites?

Maybe you could copy and paste the content of that screen.

Typically if the webpage isn't found you get an actual error message. If you see something else, you have a program re-directing you, usually spyware. Might be part of the problem.

TS has the right idea. Obviously yout network settings are good since everything else works.

I have installed SP2 a number of times and have not seen a site like Comcast or Hotmail blocked.

i had the same problem but i'm attributing it to the fact that all of a sudden norton is freaking out saying i have a trojan. hopefully my boyfriend can get it fixed cause i can't access anything except im and offline things -- i'm on a computer in class now and then at work later at night. i'm about ready to scream though. craziness.

TS, I tried what you suggested. I don't really understand what I am seeing but basically it timed out after 13 hops. It was going to comcast in local areas, chambersburg, carlisle, harrisburg and then listed 12.48.104.57 and tbcl-p011801.cgcil.ip.att.net 12,123,6.56
What does this tell me?
