Lisa,
What you don't know is that the land has already been cleared, but they just haven't gotten approval to develop. ODB (aka Joe) and I have gotten lost on the Oachita Trail because large swaths were cleared out by Deltic Timber over a year ago. I took this issue to Recreation and Parks, and they claimed that the land had recently been purchased by Deltic, and that they had the right to clear the land, and that even though the trail went over their property, they had no responisibility to make sure that it continued uninterupted. Companies like this are galvanized in this Bush economy because it favors companies like this. They don't give a crap about watershed projects, or hiking trails. I was shocked that they were allowed to violate a state trail. And like you, I am none-too-happy to see them try to put in yet more high-income subdivisions upstream from my drinking source. They have been moving this direction for some time. Unfortunately our voices will probably be lost in this age of the "golden rule", which is, he who has all the gold makes the rules!
