Just an FYI
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...81548?v=glance

I am enjoying the book a great deal..
for those too lazy to go to the link, here is a quick review from Amazon:

Flyboys is the true story of young American airmen who were shot down over Chichi Jima. Eight of these young men were captured by Japanese troops and taken prisoner. Another was rescued by an American submarine and went on to become president. The reality of what happened to the eight prisoners has remained a secret for almost 60 years. After the war, the American and Japanese governments conspired to cover up the shocking truth. Not even the families of the airmen were informed what had happened to their sons. It has remained a mystery—until now. Critics called James Bradley's last book "the best book on battle ever written." Flyboys is even better: more ambitious, more powerful, and more moving. On the island of Chichi Jima those young men would face the ultimate test. Their story—a tale of courage and daring, of war and of death, of men and of hope—will make you proud, and it will break your heart.

Some of you (you know who you are) will find this tidbit funny. Of the ten fighter pilots shot down..only two lived..

"Another was rescued by an American submarine and went on to become president."

his name, G.H.W. Bush..
But thats NOT why I'm reading the book..I swear

So whats funny about it?

I have an uncle who was a pilot in the Pacific in WWII, and a teacher who flew for the Japanese military - and neither of them ever chuckled a bit over what went down.

Let's review G:

Why it is funny:

Some of you (you know who you are) will find this tidbit funny.--------> "Another was rescued by an American submarine and went on to become president."

Why it is NOT funny:

Some of you (you know who you are) will find this tidbit funny.-------->Of the ten fighter pilots shot down..only two lived..

Are we on the same page now?

Yes Kuri, I am reading this because I think it is funny that service men were shot down and killed. That is precisely what I meant. I too have 2 grandfathers who fought in the South Pacific. You missed the point. 'Some of you might find it funny' because Bush is in the book, but as I said..it wasn't why I picked it up. Is that REALLY how you took it, or are you just starting fights again?

The fact that this has to even be discussed is, of course, proof of why the politics forum never worked out.

Kuri, it's just poorly worded. I got his drift.

BTW, I hesitate to point this out, but most of those Erowan labels as 'liberals' never questioned GHWB's service or his heroism. They're better read than that.

Erowan, you might want to take note that no one can read sarcasm in the written word. Especially if you don't point it out, or highlight or italicize it. You might want to think about that when you post, in order to be better understood, given that you are apparently a flashpoint for some here.

Kaiser, point well taken..
Of course I never claimed anyone had questioned Bush Sr's service. I simply said I was reading a good book. I thought some might look at the cover and say 'I knew it..of course he likes it..a Bush is involved' That was all I meant by 'you might find it funny'.

I wouldn't think lowly enough of anyone who posts here to think that they would enjoy reading about people being tortured to death, or American POWs being tied to trees and beheaded. Not a whole lot of people find that funny..

Thanks for the book review. I took a look at the same book in Barnes & Noble last weekend and almost bought it. I think I'll go back and get it now.
