It sucks for running. I've always had problems with it when I ran (even had it replaced by Apple and still the same deal...it locks up on me) so I switched to a flash memory type MP3 player for running (no moving parts)...even with the 20 minute buffer in it, the iPod sucks when you pound the pavement -- I mean it's got a fucking hard drive in it, did they really expect it to work properly in that case?
Now, if you're not running, it's a really nice tune player.
I have a Dell Jukebox. I use it for running, and have had no problems. I like it, except that I had to have it replaced this summer. It locked up and wouldn't do anything. The replacement locks up periodically, but has come back to life each time I have reset it.

That doesn't sound like "no problems"

I use my 1st generation iPod all the time at the gym and have for the last 5 years. Not a single problem, running or otherwise. Other than the occasional tangle with the headphone cords (somone needs to get bluetooth technology for MP3 players, stat!).
I have ordered and am waiting for my iPodShuffle, their new non-hard drive based gizmo..... looks perfect for working out and is ridiculously small (less than 1/3 of the volume of the iPod mini - about the size of a couple of sticks of gum).
I have a Rio S50. It doesn't store a whole lot, but it has no moving parts, and it comes with a plastic/rubber protective casing/belt clip that has withstood many a launch against a wall or down a football field when I miss a lift or time I knew I could hit

I bought a MPIO MP3 player a couple months ago. It has 1GB of storage space and doesn't require any software to transfer songs to it. You just plug it into your computer using USB and drag and drop the songs you want on it.
It doesn't skip, and you can organize your songs on it in any order you want.

I've got an iRiver Flash Player, and it's great. It never locks up or anything. The only trouble I have with it is the volume control, because that little stick is so small and sensitive. Other than that it's a great buy. I have the 256MB and it holds about 50-70 songs dependings on their quality.
My company gave us 20GB iPods for Christmas presents, and I love mine. Best $0 I've ever spent.

Thanks Jax. I was looking for something where you had wireless earbuds... so the cord wouldn't get tangled up. But that is interesting.
Kevin, will do. They're way backordered right now. I'm supposed to get mine by the end of the month. 240 songs can fit on there - my workouts aren't that long.
that's what i was thinking. The thing's the size of a small pack of gum and holds up to 240 songs; can't beat that, or the price!

Sony makes an MP3 player that fits aprox 170 songs into 256mb using atrac3(Or something like that, as I think that is a razor) format.
They also say it get 50+hrs of play time on a AAA battery.
I am seriously considering upgrading to one of these players.
Og.

odegi: yea. i'm not sure about the mp3 player but i have a sony psyc MP3 CD player that came with the software for Atrac3. i can fit up to 500 songs on a CD-R. The music quality is fine for me and the only flaw i've found is that sometimes it take a few seconds to change songs, but hey for $50, i'm not complaining

Some clarification is needed: Sony doesn't make MP3 players. They make atrac players. Any song you want to put on one of their players has to first be converted to their atrac format (which can't be played by any other piece of h/w or s/w). Their software will convert it for you, but it does slow down the copy time.
With that said, they do have players coming out that will play atrac and MP3, but IIRC they aren't available yet.
Oh, and also: I have a first-gen 5GB iPod that I occasionally use in the gym. I say occasionally because I'm clumsy - I've hit it with weights, tangled the headphone cords around barbells, and dropped it too many times to count. BUT - I've never had any functional problems with it, and running with it has posed no problems.
