Today we salute you; Mr. 45 year old gorilla man who works out at the university rec center.
You treat that bench press as one of your own. You care for it, and give it the most attention of anything at the gym. When you lift that bar up from it's supports, your primal screams fill the room like an alpha male looking for a mate. Your weight room dominance is unmatched. We college kids bow down to the superiority of your upper arms, for we shall never achieve the superior arm to leg ratio that you have.
You always wear sweatpants to hide those skinny legs of yours, and you only wear tights when you wear your bench press shirt. You may work the leg press machine once in a while, but its never close to your bench press. When you're not benching, you spend the rest of the time walking around, hitting on anything with boobs, and occasionally doing some shrugs right in front of the dumbbell rack.
So today, enjoy your time in the limelight, for it shall be short lived.

the gym is so full of douchebags. I'm starting to form a douchebag immunity since I have been exposed to it so much now. I don't even really look or notice anyone anymore. Except for today....I was setting up the new power rack and I had to take weights off the weight tree so I could slide it, and this guy comes up and moves it to the corner and moves the bench press bench back to where I moved it away from. And I walk up and wait for him to get off and I was like, yeah I was trying to set this up quick so I didn't get in anyones way. He goes, its ok, you can just load our plates up for us, and his friend laughed. And all I said was, "Nah...I don't think so." Why? Because I need that job, I so wish I could have been like, load this bitch!!! *chalk thrown in eyes, flying dumbbell to the nuts* Oh well, real men of doucheness strike again.
Our guy wears shorts so you can see his skinny ass legs.
Bench, pec deck...oh and the occasional curl, thats all I ever see him do.
Og.

I decided to work out at the YMCA the other day, since the university gym is super crowded in the afternoons. The Y doesn't have a squat rack, but fortunately I wasn't doing squats that day.
I had just set up the bar to do snatches, and lifted it to my knees (I do them from a hang). The gym was pretty crowded, with little walking room anywhere, and the adjustable decline bench (for situps and what not) was right in front of me, between me and the mirror.
As I'm about to start my lift some guy squeezes inbetween me and another bench, and plops down on the decline board. I put my bar down, and ask him if he minds if I use the mirror. "Sure," he says, we can trade off. "Great," I say, that works. I pick up my bar again, reset it at my knees, and he lies down on the board instead of moving.
I look at him kind of funny, and he says, "I just don't wanna hit you," and then starts doing leg raises, swinging his feet up and almost kicking both the bar and me in the face!
The fuckin' douchebag gets in my way, interrupts me as i'm about to start, twice, and almost hits me! ahhhhgghgghghghhg....
haha, thanks for listening

Welcome to the ymca, gym douchebag capital of the world, close second being gold's gym (they have better equipment). (D and I work at both... )
We JUST got a power rack in, I set it up two days ago myself and it is HUGE. Of course I don't think anyone has even used it yet... Hey thats ok, it's all mine.

I used a Y in high school, and now I belong to a local gym chain that bought out most of the Gold's in the area. You're SO right. The Y seems to attract the uber-self-righteous crowd (could it be the religious affiliation? Coincidence?). At least you have semi-nice people in other commercial gyms, though I will forever miss (and forever reference) my gym in Virginia. Maybe that's why I'm spending more and more time at my boxing gym--bad lighting, poor insulation, and loud music. MAN I can't wait until warmer weather lets me get outside more. I feel like throwing something very heavy a long way.

I use the local Y - Lousy equipment but they have a pool. The great thing is a family membership for me is only like $42 a month plus we get dicounts on after school care and summer camp for the 8 year old. I just wish they had better equipment. I haven't run into major doucheness around there.

Today's mighty oak was once just some nut who held his ground!
The thing about the YMCA's is they vary quite a bit. The Y back in my parents neighborhood (the one I use over summer and winter breaks) is nice. Only 1 squat rack, but no one in the gym squats, so I only ocassionaly have to kick curlers out of it, and other than that, its mine. It was bigger, spacious, and mostly old people who kept to the machines, except after dinner time when the youngin's would come in.
The one by my school though, as i'm sure you've picked up on, is awful!
The 1 option I have but havent' taken is to go to "Steve's Gym" (that's literally the name of it!). Its owned by this guy, Steve (obviously) and its basically like two or three rooms the size of your standard living room (with house-style walls dividing them and stuff) and lots of old equipment from the 70's.
In the basement there's the leg stuff: 1 squat rack and a bunch of leg-press, extension and curl machines. The ceiling is low, so snatches and push presses are out. The lighting is terrible and the mirrors are all glazed over.
The benefit? No lines, no waiting and its only $99 for the semester. I don't wanna but I just might have to!
