Portland & Corvallis OR
Sacramento, Napa & Davis, CA
I will there in December, but do not know when/how long I will be able to "sneak away. So I might have a half day here, or a few hours, there, and late evenings
Cheers
Peter

I was in Portland a little over a month ago. In the city they have free public transportation (bus, streetcars, trains) so it makes it easy to get around. Hopefully you like to drink beer because there are TONS of small breweries all over. I would suggest hitting up the Rogue brewery and sampling all they have
Too bad you won't be over for a whole weekend. It's only a short drive (1.5 hours or so) to Eugene where you could catch a Ducks game. Autzen Stadium is easily one of the best/loudest college football stadiums I've ever been in. Gave me chills lol

Whenever I'm in Portland I visit Powell's (depending on who you ask either the biggest or second biggest book store in the US) and I stop by the Japanese gardens. Of course since you are actually in Japan, the gardens won't be a big thing, but Powells is amazing.

What kind of things are you looking for? I live in Sacramento so if I know what you're thinking of, I can try and give you some suggestions. =)
I was there earlier this month. First time. Did a LOT of stuff.
I'd say for a couple hours up to a half-day (and knowing you), Powell's bookstore would be a good bet, pending your budget and how much spare room you have if your luggage. Considering the weather, you'll be fine here.
Otherwise, again with the iffy weather, you'd probably want to be indoors, which means brewpubs in Portland. The part of the city you'll be in will determine what you can get to in a reasonable amount of time. I didn't meet a brewpub I didn't like

Good suggestions, I will have a car. Actually I am going to Oregon State (but not the Eugene campus, but Corvallis) But it looks like tickets would be hard to get though...)

Basically, something I would not find in "a
guidebook"- good place to heat, nice pub, I am over there for work and will be tied most of the time but may have a few hours here and there where I can do something.. so something "quick" and neat- I will have a car, and i will be free at night.
Thanks for the suggestions so far.
cheers

Check Stubhub or Ebay. We managed to get front row tickets for the Oregon/Cal game this year for $45/ticket.

It's been a while since I have lived in Portland, so I can't really give you specifics, but there are tons of good restaurants and bars with local wine and beer.
Definitely hit Powells books, you can spend hours in there.
As for Corvallis, stop by Cloud 9 and the Downward dog, I'll buy you a beer. It's on first street downtown.
