Disclaimer: I own a BlackBerry 8330 Curve on Verizon.
It really depends on what you're looking to do with it. If it's more for web browsing and lifestyle productivity, iPhone. If it's more for email integration, contact information, recordskeeping (video, audio, text), and general organization. BlackBerry.
That said, VZW is launching the Motorola Droid next month, and despite my BlackBerry allegiance, I'm REALLY interested in seeing how this thing performs, especially since my equipment contract is up in January.

No! Really ... I will be getting a new phone soon, and I am torn between a Blackberry and an iPhone ... or a different smartphone if there is something better out there. I am truely ignorant ... I just started texting!

If I am correct, the Blackberry used to not have camera capability, but that has since been changed.
My brother is the techno guy, and he has owned all of them, as well as the motorola one. He liked them all, but he prefers the iPhone.
He bought me one, but it was too much for me. Wootoff is going right now and they had an 8GB iPhone for $150. I almost talked myself into it . . . but just couldn't pull the trigger.

You just want something to update your facebook status when away form the computer.

Depends.
I'd say for starters, look at the various games/software/etc available on each one if you plan to use it for such.
I personally don't need to do an assload and a half of different things on my phone, just talk, text, and the occational picture. So I didn't bother with fancy schmancy phone, although mine has stuff, and instead I have a touch for the software/games/browsing. *shrug*
So it's mostly about what you want to do. There's some spectacular shizznit out for the iphone/touch… but if all you're gonna do is call people and text… why bother. (and I really have no idea about other phones)
I have had 2 iphones, the original and now the 3GS. They are less phone and more of general computing devices. The bad is that the phone part on the iPhone isn't very good in my experience. I don't know if it has to do with ATT, the iPhone or both together, but there you go.
The good is that everything else on the iPhone is great. Texting is nice and easy. I like the chat bubble interface. Internet is great, maps + GPS makes a decent replacement for an in car GPS system. The iPod part is great. Music and movies at your fingertips all the time. Where I used to bring a laptop on trips, I now only bring my iPhone. Contact management works fine for me, although some people want more. I have my contacts sync wirelessly through Google and then also on my macs addressbook. I use Google's calendar system and have it also sync wirelessly to the iPhone.
Now for apps. There is a lot of junk out there, but the winners make it worthwhile. Things like Stanza (ebook reader), Slacker (internet radio), etc... are awesome. There are also some great free and 99c games if you're into that sort of thing.
All my BB toting friends want an iPhone and/or are interestingly looking at the Andriod 2.0 coming out. I'm also curious about Andriod 2.0 and hope it's great so the competition will continue to push everyone forward.

I have a BB Tour (got it about 2 months ago) and think it's awesome. I have a lot of trouble typing on a touchscreen (have an iTouch and I love it and all the fun apps, but I never type on it). BB is great for texting, great for facebook (lol), love the browser for what I need to do... camera works well... if I'm doing more computing than "on the run" stuff, I'd just as soon go on my laptop at home anyway. Sound/phone part works well, it syncs easily with Outlook... decent battery life...
I've been through my share of smart phones. I have to say the iPhone hands down is the best of them all. I love all the apps available, and because Apple was so smart to make their app creating software free, thousands of apps come out every month. I have some cool guitar apps, gps golf caddy apps, games, etc.
I also like that all my appts/contacts are automatically synced from computer to phone or vice versa instantly without having to plug in. I use Flixter for looking up movies no matter where I am. It uses the GPS to locate me and find what I want at the nearest theater. I can also purchase tickets from my phone, or watch previews, read reviews from my Facebook friends or professional reviewers. When I review a movie, it automatically publishes to my FB page.
I'd certainly keep an eye out for that new "droid" that's coming out soon; looks like a killer phone. That said I'm like JP, I've had lots of smartphones and the iPhone is heads and shoulders above the rest IMHO.
