Okay, I realize this is not the Men's Health fashion forum (or whatever they're calling it these days). But, I could use some input here -- I have absolutely no idea what kind of non-dress shoes I should be wearing on a day to day basis. And, having seen the photos of some of you guys from the Summit, I'm not sure this is the safest place to seek advice. So, ladies, please give your good counsel [edit: as well].
What kind of shoes should a 40 year old, 6 foot, 225 lbs guy wear with the following:
1. Cargo shorts and t-shirt / polo shirt
2. Blue jeans and polo shirt / short sleeve button up shirt
I want to look cool enough to keep up with my wife, but not like I'm trying to be too cool so I don't embarass my kids.
oh, and wear with something shorter than fuckin crew socks when you wear shorts, please. You know, unless you're gonna go all out and get garters for the socks.
GAWD, I fuckin hate tube socks. Don't get over your ankle if you aint wearin pantz.

Hmmmmm....pair of Pumas? Leather sandals for a casual day. I like a pair of plain white or blue tennis sneakers, too. Or, a pair of these:

Those plain white or blue tennis shoes would work here. As well as skechers, as mentioned above. For a bit of a dressier look, you could go old-school and wear some penny loafers.
Most athletic shoes. Just steer clear of the jazzed up basketball shoes with all the air pumps, metalic trim and spring loaded shit. For what you are describing, I tend to wear a skateboard shoe, very much like a low cut Chuck Taylor but with a little more style.

Dude, stick with the classics and you'll look fine, no matter what your age.
That means:
- Loafers (without socks if you're wearing shorts)
- Classic tennis shoes (think Jack Purcells - again with no socks or super, super low socks if you're wearing shorts)
- Classic dress shoes (the ones without the pointed toes, and not with shorts)
- flip-flops (no jesus sandals please!) if its a hot day out
Speaking of shorts. Lose the cargo pockets and go with a fitted short that stops at the knee. Imagine taking a pair of work pants and chopping them off at the knee. That's how baggy your shorts should be.
Full-disclosure: I've subscribed to GQ for 5 years, so take my advice for what it's worth. On that note, I'm also hoping you tuck-in your button-down?

Flip-flops -- it's tempting, but no. I wouldn't ever want someone to accuse me of wearing thongs.
Also, I keep remembering that great Ralphie May bit about men wearing flip-flops. You never know when you're gonna need to save a little girl from a house fire.
I still haven't bought the shoes yet -- I keep looking for a sale. I've got my eye on several listed in here, though. Those wingtips especially!
