This video is a prime example of how well our society has brainwashed us into thinking that beautiful face = beautiful voice. You hardly ever see anyone make it big in the music industry that isn't attractive, and shows like American Idol only make things worse.
Everyone in the audience, including the judges wrote her off before she even opened her mouth. Then when she did start singing, mouths dropped in awe of her voice.
This woman is now a huge sensation and this video is flooding the net. Why? Not just because of her voice, but because nobody expected that voice to come from someone who looked like her.
Why is this such a big shock to us? Does outside appearance and body shape in some way have an effect on a persons vocal chords?
I'm not saying that I am not guilty of the same judgements as others, but I am fascinated by how powerful the reaction is. It really makes me wonder how many extraordinarily talented people are walking around that will never get a chance to be heard.
Miss Boyle’s performance has been significant, too, in that it has unexpectedly provoked a debate about prejudice against the not so young and not so beautiful. The contradictions in the situation seem encapsulated by the fact that the third “Britain’s Got Talent” judge, Amanda Holden — who is lovely, 38, artfully put together and seemingly unable to move her face to register surprise — said that Miss Boyle should resist submitting to a Hollywood-style makeover.
“I won’t let Simon Cowell take her to his dentist, and I certainly won’t let her near his hairdresser,” she told The Daily Mirror. “The minute we turn her into a glamourpuss is when it’s spoilt.”
It reminds me of a few years back when the judges scoffed at Paul Potts when he said he was going to sing opera. That turned out well for him. I hope is turns out as well for Susan Boyle.

This week, her hair newly curled and her brows newly plucked, she appeared stunned, wooden, nearly monosyllabic and barely able to open her eyes when she was a guest on “The Early Show” on CBS. It was only when she began to sing “I Dreamed a Dream,” a capella, that she looked at the camera, and her personality seemed to flood into her.
I hope she has as good an outcome as Paul Potts - she has a beautiful voice.
