Our treadmill (5-year-old Horizon POS) has officially bitten the dust. The repair guy (for $120) can't fix it without spending way more than it's worth. So... time to shop for a new treadmill.
We have me (lots of walking, some sprint intervals), my H (trains for marathons on it), my DD (trains for soccer - some long runs, some sprinting), and my DS (trains for cross-country on it - mostly SS runs) all using it. Need something not super-pricey (hoping not to go over $1k, would LOVE it if it came in under that) that will hold up to a lot of use, has a nice soft bed, goes to at least 12 mph with incline at least 10 (prefer 12+).
Anyone have either good or bad comments on specific tmill brands/models before I put down the money? We're thinking of looking at Sole, maybe True (but I think they're out of my price range)...
Donno. I'd go try some out, if you can, preferably somewhere better than Dicks where they're all put together like shit and ruined by lack of care and stupid people.
We're prolly ditching the elliptical and getting a treddy from Costco. The nice thing about that, besides the fact that we can rely on a certain level of quality, is that if it does suck ass, bring it back. I'd suggest the same, depending on if there's one around, because even if you don't have a membership, if you find something in there worth getting, it'd be prolly immediately getting you your money back in price.
Mostly I came in to say I LOVE it when someone comes and charges you for stopping by and doing pretty much nothing. Makes my fruckin day. I want THAT job.
Do some research at http://www.treadmilldoctor.com/. I relied on this site pretty heavily when we bought our treadmill about a year and a half ago. My guess is you'll have trouble finding a quality model at sub 1K that could stand up to the level of use you want it to.
FWIW, we bought a Diamondback unit, the 600Tm I believe (would have to run downstairs to confirm). We're happy with it. We use it lightly to moderately. It has gone unused for a couple of multi-month stretches, but lately I've been using it several times per week.

Don't understand treadmills. Can't you run outside? Darnded site cheaper. Fresh air. Scenery. Real hills.

Well....
They are easier on your joints....
Sometimes running outside isn't an option. ie not everyone is hardcore and wants to run outside when the weather is crap.
You don't have to go outside and deal with congested paths
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy running outside. This does not mean that I think treadmills are the devil. I think they have advantages and disadvantages.
Og.

Thanks for the website - great reference point! I think we'll end up around $1500 and looking at a mid-range Sole (which was also a brand the repair guy said was good)...
Irish - we live in a very cold snowy area, and if it's not snowing it's raining. Or my DH doesn't get home til well after dark and it's just safer... so we use it when the weather isn't good or there's many other reasons not to go outside. I also like to walk on it when watching tv shows instead of being flat on my butt on the couch...
Although it's beautiful out today so I am heading out!
Bytsi,
I bought a treadmill a few months back from Omni Fitness. I got a Bremshey floor model (last year's) that was practically new. I got a great deal on it. And I love it ... cushy, has good features, relatively quiet ... etc. According to the Omni website, they are closing, so I'd bet you could get a great deal there on any of their treadmills!

Ok I get it. A skipping rope then. Far better range of exercise. Easier on the joints. Good for eye/hand co-ordination and rhythm. Easier on the running shoe expense. Doesn't raise your electric bill and costs less than a six pack of beer.

Thanks Julie - we actually just got one (well, it's not delivered yet) and I think we did ok. Got a Sole, which is one brand the repair guy recommended, mid-level (not their cheapest, not their priciest) with a nice warrantee, all the features we wanted, and a few other nice extras (built in fans ). I can't wait to get it here, cuz getting shocked on the one we have is really getting old...

Ok... but it is somewhat harder to walk on a skipping rope (we call 'em jump ropes) or to train for a marathon on one...
You ever skipped for four hours? Marathon? Easy... Lol

Check out treadmilldoctor.com as recommended. They recommend a great unit for about $1000 that, in their opinion, is a better choice than some of the more expensive models. The one that they really like is the Nordic Track at Costco. Normally, they aren't a big fan of Nordic Track treadmills, but for this model, they said it's very tough to beat. A buddy has one, as do I, and it's proven to be a real work horse. Big continuous duty motor, large deck, decent speed and incline abilities.
I like to run outside, so the treadmill gets used mostly for warm ups for lifting days and cardio sessions when I can't get outside.
I'm happy with mine.
